President Liam O’Shea’s prize 2020 settled..

After an 8 month delay due to Covid 19 restrictions 2020 Club President Liam O’Shea saw his prize settled this afternoon.

In brilliant sunshine Liam saw Mike McGrath and Michael Dempsey tee it up.  Michael D definitely brought his A short came to the final and his excellent chipping and putting proved the decider when beating Mike on the 16th.

Congratulations to both players on reaching the final and to Liam for presenting a fantastic prize.  Special congratulations of course go the Michael Dempsey – 2020 President’s Prize winner.

Super Sunday ? Very super indeed !!!!

Many congratulations to our three teams who began the 2021 campaigns this afternoon and who all won their matches in style.

First up was the Junior Cup team managed by Colm Mulcahy & Eddie Lonergan who set the tone for the day with a great 3 – 2 Victory over Elm Park.  Three home wins from Harry Kirk (6&4), Alan Keane (4&2) and Diarmaid MacGabhann (4&3) sealed the win.  Donal O’Gallagher, a last minute call up after Ray Nolan pulled out through injury came up short away in Elm Park and Dylan Holmes lost 3&2 despite a very solid round of 2 over to that point.

Tom Kelly’s Metropolitan Cup team were next out against Milltown Golf Club.  With 4 matches at home and three away Tom had no less than three players pull out through injury over the past three days but came up with the winning formula (The Magnificent 7, as he referred to his team ). Craig Hazleton won at home 6&5 and Dom Brodeur pulled off a fantastic win away 8&6 to get the ball rolling but things got considerably tighter for the remainder of the matches.  Ben Crowley secured the third point away, winning on the 18th and with Trevor Philips and Stephen Bourne still on the course at home and player/manager, Frank Rennix also on the course at Milltown, up stepped debutante Luke McLoughlin to secure the all important 4th match point on the 19th hole.  A stunning tee shot to 6 feet did the trick for Luke.

Jimmy Bruen manager Alan Byrne opted to go the away leg at Woodbrook while assistant manager Fergal Duffy looked after the home matches. An emphatic 5&4 home win for the Paul Keane and Ian Mullally partnership gave Greystones our first point on the board. This was followed by another great 3&2 home win for Brian Murray and Jamie Anderson.  Mark Byrne & Dave Mangan came up just short at Woodbrook, loosing 2&1 and, after a great fightback, Michael Smullen & Ray McDonnell narrowly lost on the 18th.  So 2 all in the rubber and Collie Dunne & Tom Sheehy were one down on the 18th tee box.  Collie hit a monster drive to leave Tom 60 yards to the pin while the Woodbrook pair were on the 10th fairway but not far from the 18th green.  Tom hit a great pitch to 12 feet and Woodbrook pitched to 15 feet below the hole.  A good put had Woodbrook 2 feet from the hole but crucially, having played an additional shot.  Collie calmly putted to the hole for a picky up (have two, take two) and the win and the match moved to the 19th.  Both teams were short right off the tee and a deft chip by Collie and nerves of steel from Tom, holing a 6 footer sealed the third win for the club.

Congratulations to all the managers / players today and thanks to the supporters who came out to enjoy some great sporting entertainment.

Onwards an upwards !

Super Sunday – Teams update

We are getting our 2021 Interclub campaigns off with a bang this Sunday with no less than three of our teams teeing it up in the afternoon.

First up however, at 14.10 is the final of 2020 President, Liam O’Shea’s Prize which had to be delayed due to travel restrictions last year. Michael McGrath and Michael Dempsey will contest the final in what is likely to be a tight match. Best of luck to both players. Saturday will have given us the 64 qualifiers for 2021 President Pat O’Neill’s Prize so best of luck to everyone competing in the qualifier on Saturday (and in the overflow on Friday).

At 14.20 Colm Mulcahy’s Junior Cup team play their first-round match against Elm Park. With three matches at home Colm will be hoping for a good performance from what looks like an extremely strong team.

Following the Junior Cup, Tom Kelly’s Metropolitan Cup team face Milltown, again with three matches at home. Tom is also fielding a very strong team with Frank Rennix is looking after the away matches. Tee off for the first Metro match is 15.00.

Last but definitely not least, Alan Byrne will lead his team in the Jimmy Bruen first round. We are up against Woodbrook in this competition and Alan is confident that he has picked a team that can win the tie. Tee time for match 1 is 15.40.

Greystones Ladies kick off their Revive Campaign on Monday 14th June against local rivals, Delgany. First tee time is 14.00

The great news is that spectators (max 100) are permitted under new Covid 19 guidelines and what better way to spend an afternoon than watching live matches and cheering on your home club teams.

Golfer Of The Year 2021

Unfortunately it was not possible to run the Golfer Of The Year competition in 2020 due to Covid 19 restrictions.

It is our intention to run the GOY this year and hopefully this will go to plan ( of course we may need to abandon this depending on Government restrictions but let’s travel optimistically for now! ).

We are making a few changes to how the GOY points are allocated this year.  Medal winners will get 100 points as in previous years with 10th place getting 10 points.  Captain’s prize will have the same allocation as Medals x 1.5.  Class Cup winners will get 100 points.  The top 8 in the President’s prize will receive GOY points ( 100, 90, 80, 80, 70, 70, 70, 70 ) as will the top 4 in the Frank Talbot ( 100, 100, 90, 90. 80, 80, 80, 80 ).  Unfortunately the Carrinson won’t run this year but in future years the top four in this competition will also receive GOY points.
