Junior Scramble Results – 19 October 2024

We held our 27th and final Junior Competition of the 2024 season this afternoon. Nearly 70 boys and girls played in near perfect conditions and we managed to get 15 of the 17 groups in before the light faded. The final two groups just about finished before total darkness fell!

It was great to see so many stay for the prizegiving, and a big thank you from everyone in the Junior Section to our Lady and Men’s Captains, Ciara and Mark, for their attendance.

The prizegiving started with a very special presentation from Lady Captain Ciara, who presented Aoife Dempsey with a Golf Ireland Gold Medal for the best Girls WHS handicap progression over the season. Aoife had a phenomenal year on the course and this is a very well deserved award. Well done Aoife, we are all very proud of you!

Then over to our Junior Convenor, Neil, who announced next year’s Junior Captains. Shauna Seifried will hold the office of Junior Girls Captain, with Will O’Riordan taking over the reigns as Boys Captain. Two upstanding Junior members who have both had great seasons on the course!

And then on to the results, expertly called by our Boys Captain, Dylan Holmes. Big congratulations to our winning team, a mix of Blue, Reds and White, covering all of our Junior categories. Well done Ruadhán, Max, Tom and Caoileann on a great score led by some LPGA tourlike putting from Caoileann!

  1. Ruadhán Murray, Max Mahady, Tom Lawlor & Caoileann Murray
  2. Will O’Riordan, Patrick Murray, Seán Nunan & Bobby Tierney
  3. Jamie Anderson, James Power, Mason & Ava Melody
  4. Dylan Holmes, Aaron Byrne, Tom Farrell & Ben McFadden

The proceedings ended with some lovely words from our Mens Captain, Mark, who as a former Junior Convenor has always been a massive supporter of Junior golf in GGC.

As ever, a big Junior Section thank you to Jackie, Freddie and all the bar staff for keeping everybody watered and Ali, Olivia and all in the restaurant for feeding everybody!

So that’s a wrap on 2024 team and tournament golf. We will be in touch soon regarding our Winter coaching programme and in the meantime, we hope to see you all in the Club next Saturday evening for the pennant awards, where our Junior’s provided the Club with three pennants this year, including our first ever Green Pennant from the outstanding Fred Daly team.

We hope to see you all back for the 2025 season with competitions starting in late March or early April. With the huge number of Juniors playing every week, we will need more support from parents to ensure that we can continue to successfully run our weekly competitions. We averaged 60 boys and girls playing every Saturday and we really need to broaden the parent support group involved in this.

The Junior Committee

Father and Son Final 2024

The Father and Son Final for 2024 took place recently and featured Ray and Keith McDonnell against Declan and Ruadhán Murray.

These four had been whittled down from the 34 pairs who started off hoping to lift the trophy.

With both Keith and Ruadhán having performed so well this year for the club and the fathers bringing plenty of experience it promised to be a close affair.

And so it proved with Ray and Keith clinching the title on the 17th by a score of 3 & 1.

Congratulations to Ray and Keith who defended their title from 2023. It’s actually their third success having also won in 2011.

Revive Active Women’s Four Ball Team

On what had promised to be wet and blustery day, but to the delight of all turned out
to be just a blustery day, the Revive Active Women’s Four Ball Team consisting of
Niamh Keilthy & Joyce Kirwan, Jennifer Moore & Emma Haugh, Sophie Lumley &
Amanda Lawless and Shauna Seifried & Áine O’Rourke were preparing to play their
final round for the coveted Leinster Pennant against The Heath Golf Club. Waiting in
the wings and ready to cheer their fellow team players on were subs Marguerite
Hamill, Iris Haughton, Jacinta Deane and Sandra Cotter. This being the Final it was
held in a neutral venue, Mullingar Golf Course. Mullingar was the work of famous
Scottish golf course designer and 5 times Open Champion James Braid [1870 –
1950]. Although some changes have been made since its creation in 1935, Mullingar
is essentially as its designer intended, a championship challenge set in a mature
wooded parkland that was once part of the Belvedere Estate and what a hidden gem
it is.
With Niamh & Joyce first up against a former Irish International golfer it was, as
expected, a hard battle and Greystones being 2 down after 7 holes they managed to
win 8 and while it went back and forth with holes they were 1 down going down 18.
Jennifer & Emma got a very early lead and after 9 holes the opposition had yet to
win 1 hole, we were 6 up. As happens in these matches The Heath ladies managed
to win 3 holes on the bounce bringing Greystones back to only 3 up going down 13.
An easy win on 13 for our dynamic duo and dormie going down 14. Another easy
win again for them on 14 and there was 1 point on the board for Greystones.
The Third pairing out were Shauna & Áine and this due being 2 up after 8 holes it
was nip and tuck. They were 1 up going down 10.
Sophie & Amanda were very much up against it with two ladies from The Heath who
were very much on their game and even though Sophie was 2 over par on the front 9
giving 10 and 12 shots she just couldn’t manage to get a break from these ladies.
Greystones were 4 down after 9. It just wasn’t their day and even though they both
Sophie & Amanda played magnificent golf it was a point on the board for The Heath
after 13 holes.
1 point for each team.
Back to Niamh & Joyce and they were going down 18 – 1 down and with a shot
Joyce played the hole beautifully and was on the par 5 green in regulation with a
long 30 foot putt but so was The Heath International player and she was only 10 foot
from the hole. Joyce hit an amazing putt which went within an inch of the hole to
finish 5 nett 4 with a gimmie putt. The pressure was on The Heath they had to make
birdie to win their match. Well she wasn’t an Irish International for no reason, she
sank the 10 foot putt to half the hole and give The Heath a second point on the
board.
It was back down to 17 to see how Shauna & Áine were getting on. They were 1 up
going and it was still all to play for. Our play off pairing, Jennifer & Emma were down
on the practice area warming up for the possibility of a play off.

As it happens luck wasn’t on our side and 17 was lost so they were all square going
down 18. The best we could hope for was the play off and our dynamic duo were
making sure they were nicely warmed up for it.
With all eyes on Shauna & Emma after a very closely fought 17 holes it wasn’t to be
and in the end The Heath were the victors. Well done to them.
Lisa, Jean and the panel would like to thank the club for their support all along this
long fought campaign. 99 teams entered and we made it to the Leinster Final which
is a tremendous achievement and we should all be very proud. We would also like
to thank all the supporters who travelled to Mullingar to cheer on a the ladied, it was
so heartwarming to see so many Greystones supporters there.

Leinster Woman’s Trophy

Greystones won the inaugural Leinster Women’s trophy on a very windy & damp day in Baltinglass beating Malahide 4 / 2.

Malahide had won North Leinster section from group of 50 clubs and Greystones had won south section.

The team in the final was Deirdre Ahern, Marguerite Hamill, Joyce Kirwan, Amanda Lawless, Michele Knapp, Ann Clarke, Grace Dodd & Trudy Bolton with help in earlier rounds from
Ger O’Shea, Sandra Cotter & Orla Rushe.

The Caddies were Iris Haughton, Frances Twomey, Amanda Lawless, Patricia O’Sullivan, Anne Crotty & Aine O’Rourke and in earlier rounds Angela Shaw and Anne Browner.

It was a very tight and exciting match in tough conditions. With 3 wins on board, Deirdre, Joyce and Grace Greystones only needed a half to win and avoid a play off. Michele on the 18th and the match is level, no shots in that match but opponent now playing off 14 (wearing a pony tail)! Michele sank the winning putt just as our Under 15 Boys won their match and appeared at the back of the Green.

A very exciting day for Greystones Golf Club with great turn out of supporters, President John Langrell and Laura. Captains Ciara and Mark, VC Janet, Club Manager Jim Melody, Pro Davie Lewis and many more. Much appreciated by the team managed by Mary Cahill and Polly O’ Reilly

Many thanks to Michael Joyce getting our Live Scoring App back on track

Under 15s triumph in Baltinglass

Our Leinster Under 15s Interclub team were in a wet and wild Baltinglass GC this morning to take on Carton House in their final.

George O’Briens team were as follows: Ruadhán Murray, Dylan Cavazza and Conor Dignam.

Both Conor and Dylan got off to great starts with both lads being ahead at the turn. Dylan was 2 up and Conor 1 up.

Ruadhán found himself one down at the turn and his opponent extended it to a two hole advantage on the 10th. Two halves on 11 & 12 left the Carton House player two up.

Dylan Cavazza extended his lead to 3 up on the 10th and put the first point on the board for Greystones with further wins on 12 & 13 which gave him a 5 & 4 win.

Meanwhile Conor Dignam also put further distance between him and his opponent with wins on 10 & 11. Despite his opponent winning two holes, Conor won 14 & 16 to win 3 & 2 which gave Greystones the 2nd point they needed to win the pennant.

At this point Ruadhán Murray was called in as his teammates had the points in the bag.

To get to the final the team had beaten Killiney, Wicklow, Castle, Newbridge and Edenderry.

Congratulations to George O’Brien who was assisted through the year by Ben Crowley and Chris Lawless. Thanks also to Davey Lewis and his team and the junior convenor Neil Lawless.

Well done not just to the lads today but also Ollie Packman, John O’Boyle and JP Lynch who played and won matches throughout the campaign.
