Intermediate Foursomes

The Intermediate Foursomes team took on Lucan on Sunday 9th in their quarter final round, managed by Orla Delaney Another wet & windy day in both venues but didn’t stop Greystones who had 3 wins against a very strong Lucan team.

Playing at home were Amanda Lawless & Áine O’Rourke along with Marguerite Hamill & Joyce Kirwan who had very comfortable wins. Great golf played by both pairings.

Geraldine O’Shea & Helen Creedon along with Jacinta Deane & Trisha Moore played away & the standard of golf was exceptional from both pairings. Jacinta & Trisha went 5up & finished on the 15th & with 2 birdies & multiple pars left their opponents speechless . It was a pleasure to watch them all play
Next round is semi final against Rathfarnham on Saturday June 29th

Old Conna Seniors team through to next round

On a cool June afternoon our Old Conna Seniors team took on Dun Laoghaire in search of a 3rd title in a row.

Dermot Whiston and Pete Murray sent out a team with a mixture of experience and some new players. The competition consists of 6 pairs playing fourball over 18 holes and the 5 best cards counting towards the overall total. As Greystones had the home advantage we had to give the opposition a 5 point start.

After 9 holes Greystones had the following points total 17, 22, 20, 24, 23 and 22 and were in a very strong position. All the pairs kept progressing well and the final scores were as follows:

  • C. Watchorn/K. Stewart 40pts
  • W. Byrne/J. Teehan 42pts
  • C. Tarter/B. O’Connor 41pts
  • G McKenna/T. Creed 46pts
  • M. Whelan/J. Burke 41pts
  • P. Murray/J. Grennan 44pts

Which gave us a total of 214 for our best 5 cards. Dun Laoghaire best 5 cards gave them 173 points plus 5 courtesy points which gave them a total of 178.

So an overall win by 36 points for Greystones and they now go on to meet Kilmashogue in the next round.

Congratulations to the team and management.

Men’s Leinster Trophy team bow out

On Sunday afternoon Mark Byrne’s Men’s Leinster Trophy team took on Coolattin GC in a 3rd round match.

There were 3 matches in Greystones and 4 away. First up at home was Keith McDonnell who got off to a quick start and was 3 up through 6. Ruadhan Murray was up next and was 3 up through 8. Last up for the home side was Trevor Phillips and again he got off to a very positive start and was 2 up through 9 holes

So while things were looking good at home the going was proving more difficult away from home. Fergal Duffy was up first and was 2 down at the turn, Colm Mulcahy was 1 up through 9, Paul Keane followed and was down early on and unfortunately had to withdraw injured on the 10th hole. Last up away was Eddie Davis and while level early on he was 2 down after 9 holes.

Keith and Trevor put points on the board early winning 5&3 and 6&4 respectively. Coollattin were level quickly with Paul’s injury and Eddie being beaten on 14.

Ruadhan Murray made it a clean sweep at home winning 2&1. Fergal was then beaten 4&3 leaving the match level at 3 points each.

So the final match left was in Colm Mulcahy’s hands. Colm extended his lead to 2 up after 10 but then the Coollattin man turned the match around and quickly developed a 3 hole lead. Colm then fought back winning 16 and 17. Unfortunately the Coolattin man took the last and won 2up.

Commiserations to Mark and his team on a hard fought loss.

Leinster Fourball triumph over Newlands

This Sunday afternoon Gerry Browner assisted by his brother John sent our Leinster Fourball team to take on Newlands GC.

Newlands had the advantage of having the playoff at their course in the event of a draw.

Starting in Greystones Michael Whelan and Macdara Cummins were one down early on but with wins at the 5th and 6th they went 1 up and stretched that to 2 up after 9. Gavin Campbell and Brian Fawsitt were all square through 6 holes but Newlands took control after that winning the next 4 holes.

Away from home John Burke and Michael O’Neill won the 1st but we’re quickly behind with Newlands moving in to a 3 hole lead after 8. Andrew Nolan and Brook Mangan got off to a fast start and were 3 up through 5 holes.

Back in Greystones Michael and Macdara put a point on the board as they took control of their match and won 5&3. Newlands quickly leveled the match by closing out the 2nd  match in Greystones 4&3.

In Newlands John and Michael battled manfully by winning 15 and 16 but eventually were defeated on 17. Meanwhile Andy and Brook brought the match level at 2-2 by winning the 16th hole and winning 3&2.

As a result of the new rules we now had a playoff. Andy and Brook has been nominated before the match had kicked off and Brook brought the win home by parring the first playoff hole.

Well done to Gerry and his team on a well deserved win.

Fred Daly March on

Our Fred Daly were up against near neighbours on Sunday afternoon. Bray had the advantage of the home draw so we had 3 matches in Bray and 2 at home. At home we had Toby Murphy and Milo Doyle while away Dylan Holmes, Will O’Riordan and Jamie Anderson.

After 9 holes at home Toby had a two hole advantage and Milo was all square. Meanwhile in Bray at the turn Jamie had opened up a sizeable advantage and was 5 up. Dylan was 1up and Will was 3 down.

After the turn Toby powered on and delivered the first point with a 6&4 win. Jamie followed suit in Bray winning 5&4. The other 3 matches were extremely tight and Dylan finally put his opponent away 2&1 which gave Greystones the required 3 points. Milo was called in while all square after 16 and Will was called in while 1 down through 16.

Up next will be Edmondstown or Carton House.

Jimmy Bruen defeated by Castle

Michael Keating and Gerry Kenny sent their Jimmy Bruen team out to take on the Castle GC team on Sunday afternoon. With two matches to take place at each venue Castle had the home advantage of a playoff in the event of a tie. At home Rob Tierney and Collie Dunne led off and got off to a good start and were 2up as they went down the lane. Next up was George O’Brien and Gary O’Connor. An up and down front nine left the Greystones pair two down at the turn. Away from home Derek O’Regan and Peter Nolan were first up followed by Ray Nolan and Trevor Phillips. Both matches were very tight with no big advantage for either side over the early stages.

At home George and Gary fought on but went down 3&2. Away Ray and Trevor were eventually beaten 2&1 while Derek and Peter gained a half point but this was enough for Castle to go through. Rob and Collie were 4  up through 13 when they were called in
