Lady Captain Amanda’s prize to the Junior Girls

Well done to all the girls who took part in Lady Captain Amanda’s prize to the junior girls this afternoon ( Sunday 25th ).

There was a great turnout and many thanks to Patrice Dowling and Helen Creedon for looking after the event so efficiently . Unfortunately Iris Haughton couldn’t attend today’s event due to a family bereavement.

The winner of the main 9 hole event was Lili McInerney who shot 20 points off 28, beating Stella Doyle (23) on the last six. In third place was Shauna Seifried (10) who shot 19 points with Laura Haugh (25) in fourth with 18 points.

Shauna also won the longest drive while nearest the pin was won by Vanessa Guilliver.

Shauna’s sister Sinead was first in the sixes comp, with Aoibheann Dowdall in second and Vanessa Gulliver in third place. In joint forth were Aoife Dempsey and Amy Murphy.

The Sixes longest drive was won by Aoibheann Dowdall.

Lady Captain Amanda was on hand to see all the girls of the tee and present them with their prizes.

Half time in Under 15 Leinster final

It’s half time in the Under 15 Leinster final and Greystones find ourselves 3:2 down before heading to Roganstown in a couple of weeks for the second leg.
Davie and Ben would have been hoping to take a lead to Roganstown but we played a very strong team here today and, while we might have won 4:1, we might also have lost by the same margin.
First out today was Ruadhán Murray who had been quite excellent in his first two matches for the team, winning early on both occasions but today Ruadhán came up against a good player in excellent form.  Ruadhán won the first hole but from there, through a combination of some excellent play by his opponent and a few bad bounces, he found himself behind the 8 ball at five down through seven holes.  He didn’t give up however and halved the next five holes before loosing the thirteenth after bouncing straight left off the fairway to behind a tree.  One point on the board for Roganstown 6&5.
Milo Doyle was out next and, despite loosing the first Milo was in great form today.  He immediately pulled his deficit back with a win on the second and was two up after six. His tee shot on the seventh found the bunker on the corner and when he left the ball in it after his first bunker shot in the bunker it looked like he might loose the hole.  His second bunker shot however almost pitched in the hole and stopped within three feet for a tap in par and an unexpected win. The ninth and tenth were traded, Roganstown winning the ninth and Greystones winning the tenth to maintain the three hole lead but Milo’s opponent was dogged and he then won the eleventh, back to two.  Twelve was halved and Milo played the thirteenth well to win and get back to three up.  Losses on fourteen and fifteen had Davie and Ben on tenterhooks but they needn’t have worried. Milo won the sixteenth and birdied the seventeenth to close out the match 3&1.
Marc Lawless would be the first to admit that early on in his match he didn’t quite have his A game today and he found himself three down after just four holes. Marc being Marc however he stayed in the match and won the fifth, sixth and seventh ( holing a twenty footer ) to get back to all square. The match remained all square at the half way point before, once again Roganstown forged a three hole lead with wins on ten, thirteen and fourteen.  Three down and four to go Marc was in bother but typical of him he battled back, winning the fifteenth, sixteenth before birdying the seventeenth to once again square the match.  Marc hit a great drive up eighteen and was well ahead of his  opponent.  The flag was on the lower tier today and the Roganstown boy hit a fantastic shot to fifteen feet.  Marc pulled his approach slightly and his ball found the top tier, leaving Marc a really tricky putt.  He hit a good putt to twelve feet.  Roganstown’s putt stopped within a couple of inches of the hole so Marc faced his twelve footer to keep the match alive.  He hit a super putt and was walking it into the hole from six feet !!.  Off to the nineteenth.  Marc’s tee shot was unlucky to just fall into the bunker right while his opposition’s ball was just shot right of the green with the pin on the front.  Marc’s bunker shot ran out to fifteen feet while the Roganstown ball was pitched to four feet.  Marc had to watch his putt roll agonisingly past the hole and his opponent kept his nerve to hole out and secure the very hard fought for point.
William O’Riordan was out number four today and faced an excellent young player.  This was a very tight match with seven of the first ten holes halved and, after a win with a birdie two for Roganstown on the eleventh, the match was still all square.  Never one to be over awed by anything William stuck to his guns, winning the twelfth to go one up and then holing a long range putt for a half on the thirteenth. He held another tricky putt on the fourteenth to extend his lead before winning the fifteenth to go dormie three up.  He secured the half he needed on the sixteenth to win a much needed point for the team
Toby Murphy was our anchorman this afternoon and, like Marc, played well but probably didn’t quite have his A game today.  He was slogging it out, fighting like a dog to stay in the match and turned all square.  A win on the tenth got his nose in front but this was short-lived as he lost the eleventh and twelfth to go one down.  His tenacity was to the fore as he ground out halves on the thirteenth, fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth but on seventeen his tee shot went away right and he ended up having to chip out to the thirteenth fairway.  Toby’s third shot caught a tree at the fourteenth tee box and he was lying four after chipping on the green.  A textbook par for the Roganstown man was enough to win the hole and the match 2&1.
So we all had off to Roganstown for the second leg on Sunday October 9th, trailing 3:2 but with all to play for. Tee off will be 13.00 on the 9th.
Many thanks to all the supporters who came out to support the lads this afternoon.

Three trophies decided today…..

Congratulations to Maurice & Harry Phelan, who today beat Brian & Tom Murray in a close run match to win the 2022 Father & Son Trophy.  Brian & Tom were two down after six but had turned the match around by the tenth tee at which time, they were one up.  The match remained tight however and Maurice & Harry fought back to win on the seventeenth, 2&1.

L-R: Maurice, Brian, Harry & Tom

The Frank Talbot fourball trophy was also decided this afternoon. Veteran, Eugene Corrigan had teamed up with Pete Murray this year and they made it all the way, beating Paul Byrne & Philip Dempsey to win the final this afternoon.  Eugene & Pete played well and, with the benefit of shots had their noses in front pretty much the whole way.  Pete and Eugene were two up after thirteen and wins on fourteen and fifteen settled the match by a margin of 4&3.Congratulations to Eugene & Pete.

L-R: Champions, Eugene, Pete with Paul & Philip

Last out this afternoon was our 2022 Glenavy final with Mary Hutch & Henry Gilbert taking on previous winners, Aideen & Barry O’Leary.  This afternoon was a tightly contested affair with the match still delicately poised after fourteen with just one hole in it, in favour of Aideen & Barry. This match also went as far as the seventeenth with Aideen & Barry holding on to their slender lead to come out on top.

Glenavy Winners – Barry & Aideen
Runners up – Henry & Mary

Under 15 boys move to the final

Congratulations to David Lewis and his team who, yesterday, progressed to the final of this Golf Ireland Leinster competition.

The boys faced an uphill battle yesterday, playing Carlow with three matches away but they came up trumps with an excellent win and some fine individual performances. Davie looked after the home pairs while Ben Crowley traveled to Carlow with the team. President Neville, Lady Captain Amanda and Vice Captain John were all at the matches to lend support.

At home we had William O’Riordan out first.  William is one of a group of players who have been so unlucky in the past 3 years not to win this pennant and he was well up for the fight.  Turning three up after wins on the eighth and ninth holes, he went four up with another win on the tenth and managed his match well from there to win 3&2 after a fine win on the fifteenth hole and a lip out for a birdie half on the sixteenth.

This wasn’t the first point on the board for Greystones however.  In Carlow, Ruadhán Murray was playing a blinder.  He won the first hole before loosing two on the bounce to go one down through three holes. He then went on to win the next nine holes to close his match 8&6.

Toby Murphy was playing second at home and turned two down, losses on eleven and twelve took the match to four down but Toby being Toby, he dug in, winning the next three holes before an unfortunate loss on the sixteenth had him dormie two down.

Our second man out in Carlow was Milo Doyle who like Toby, was down at the halfway stage. Milo turned three down and, also like Toby, Milo fought hard to get the match back to one down with four to play with wins on the thirteenth and fourteenth. He lost the fifteenth and could only halve the sixteenth and was, again like Toby, dormie two down.

It was all getting very tight…

Our final match saw Marc Lawless playing third in Carlow. Marc is having a great year and played well again yesterday.  He was two up through nine but from there the match got extremely tight with both sides perhaps sensing that it could be the decider.  Holes were halved from the tenth through the thirteenth before Marc exerted a little extra pressure with a win on the fourteenth to go three ahead with four to play.  The fifteenth was halved but Marc found trouble on the sixteenth to go back to two up but crucially with only two holes let to play.

So…  two points in the bag and dormie two down in two and dormie two up in the final match – all very exciting for those lucky enough to be there.

The first of the remaining points went to Carlow with Toby coming up just short, winning the seventeenth but only halving the eighteenth to loose 1 down.

Milo also won his seventeenth to take his match to the eighteenth tee but didn’t have to finish as Marc came up trumps with a well earned half on his seventeenth to win his match 2&1 and the point that takes the lads to the Leinster final..

May congratulations to David, Ben and all the squad.

Inaugural Wicklow Girls a tremendous success

Today saw the inaugural Wicklow Girls event take place in Greystones.  The Wood family have kindly sponsored the Wicklow Boys event for many years and suggested last year that they would also like to sponsor a Wicklow Girls event.  Needless to say, Junior Convener, Peter Anderson and the Junior Committee were more than delighted to jump on board with most of the heavy lifting being done by Patrice Dowling with assistance from Iris Haughton and Peter.

Greystones welcomed players from fourteen clubs today for this event, from as far afield as Craigavon and Westport.

Golf Ireland were also on hand, in the form of Neil Kilgallon, who ran a Girls Development Hub event in conjunction with the main Wicklow Girls competition.  In fact, this turned out to be the biggest Girls Development Hub event across the country this year.

As ever, behind the scenes, club OM Liam Moulton made sure that the day ran perfectly.

Carmel Wood was on hand to present the winner, Ellen Larkin from Powerscourt Golf Club, with the beautiful trophy.  Ellen shot 43 points off 28.

Isabella Stewart won the May Fitzgibbon plate for the best score by a Greystones player.

We look forward to welcoming all the players, and more, next year for the second running of this excellent competition.

Under 15 boys move to the semi finals

Congratulations to David Lewis and his squad of Under 15 boys who, on Friday beat Tulfarris 3 1/2 to 1 1/2 to move to the Leinster Semi finals.

Ben Crowley stood in to manage the team with David being on parental leave. Junior convener Peter Anderson, looked after the home players with Ben travelling to Tulfarris.

Big wins for Ruadhán Murray ( 7&5 ) at home and Toby Murphy ( 8&7 ) away, set the scene but the tie was still far from over with our other away matches far from being in the bag.  In Tulfarris, Will O’Riordan lost by a margin of 3&1 and Marc Lawless was also behind in his match. It fell to Milo Doyle at home, who was one down after five holes to stay resilient, which he did, winning his match 4&3, to settle the tie for Greystones.  Marc was two down through fourteen when called in.

Well done to all involved.

President Neville’s prize to the junior boys..

President Neville’s prize to the junior boys took place this afternoon in brilliant sunshine (for the most part) and thankfully we dodged the heavy rain which had been forecast.

We had a great turnout and saw some excellent scoring.  Many thanks to our President Neville for his continued support of the Greystones Juniors and well done to the prize winners, and to all those who took part.

Thanks to Paul and his team in the bar and to Ali and Lukas in the kitchen who made sure all the boys were fed and watered after their rounds and of course to Junior Convenor Peter Anderson, and his team on the day of Brian Murray, Declan Murphy and Anto Byrne who made the day possible.

Of course, the biggest congratulations are reserved for our winner JP Lynch.
