Top ten finish for Isabella Stewart

Well done to Junior Girls Captain, Isabella Stewart who secured a top ten finish in the Connaught Girls Amateur Open today. Isabella Stewart shot a brilliant one under in her closing round to finish the championship on +12 and move up from seventeenth place on the leaderboard after her first two rounds.  This is an excellent performance from Isabella who spent the early months of this year in the US playing golf.

The event was won by Emma Fleming (Elm Park) who finished 1 under for the championship.

Well done Isabella!

Girls & Boys Inter-club teams in Elm Park qualifier

Our boys and girls teams were out today in the Inter-club qualifier which was hosted by Elm Park today (27th June).

All our players put decent rounds together in difficult conditions, but it wasn’t to be for either team today with just one Girls and one Boys team to qualify for the finals. Delgany qualified from the boys section and, at the time of posting, while the girls competition wasn’t complete, our girls weren’t in the running.

Doireann Dowdall, Mia Walsh and Jane Lumley were our girls team today with Milo Doyle, Marc Lawless, Conor Dignam, Leo Murphy and John Byrne representing the club for the boys.

Two from two today for our teams…

Congratulations to our Irish Junior Foursomes and Ladies Revive Active teams who both came through their matches this afternoon (4th June) with flying colours.

First out this afternoon were Peter Andersons’ Irish Junior Foursomes team who had a potentially tricky away fixture against Dun Laoghaire Golf Club. President Marguerite, Lady Captain Celine and Vice Captain Mark were on hand hand to see the team off.

An injury to Dylan Holmes meant a team reshuffle yesterday but Peter has a great squad to choose from and was still able to field a strong team.

Toby Murphy & Milo Doyle led out first and were giving two shots. The pair looked comfortable right from the start, winning the first four holes and maintaining that lead after six.

Our second pair of Junior Boy’s Captain, Jamie Anderson & William O’Riordan were giving five shots had started a little slowly by their standards and were one down after six holes but crucially the team were up three up on aggregate.

At the halfway point Jamie & William were still one down but had found their rhythm and were playing very nicely.  Tony & Milo traded holes seven & eight and halved the ninth to stay at four up.

On the back nine, Jamie & William threw in a few birdies to wrest control of the match from their opposition and were three up after fifteen.

Despite losing the fifteenth, Toby & Milo were still four up in their match and when both pairs halved the sixteenth the match was done – seven up with just four to play.

Next up will be either Bray or Wicklow in the Leinster South final which is to be played on July 2nd in Edmonstown.

Lisa Croke had negotiated a great win for her Revive Active team when they played Woodbrook at the end of April and was hoping for a similar performance today against Coollattin Golf Club.

Lisa has assembled an incredibly strong squad and had a strong team out this afternoon. Jacinta Dean was looking after the home venue while Lisa made the trip to Coollattin.

Shots are given / received in this fourball competition. Our first pair out of Aisling Marmion & Amanda Lawless were giving one of their opponents nineteen shots but, despite this, our pair were on the ball this afternoon and stormed into a five hole lead after the first nine. Further wins on the tenth and twelfth sealed the match 7&6.

Second out at home were Sophie Lumley & Mary Lockhart who had played so well together in the Senior Foursomes last week. Once again the partnership worked, Sophie & Mary were four up through nine and then won ten to go five up.

Through no fault of theirs Mary & Sophie’s match was very slow, and, by the ninth our third home match of Jennifer Moore & Aine O’Rourke had to be called through. Jennifer was playing great and Aine was coming in when called upon and like Sophie & Mary were four up after nine and five up through ten.

Meanwhile away in Coolatin Niamh Kielty & Joyce Kirwan were playing very well and while they turned just one up, a win on ten gave them a little buffer while another on the fourteenth had them at three up.

Mary Hutch & Sandra Cotter were our final pair away from home and were in a very tough match also. A win on nine got their noses in front but their opposition got off to a stronger start on the back nine, winning ten, twelve and thirteen to get ahead by two. Mary & Sandra were not going to beaten easily however and fought hard to square the match with wins on the fifteenth and sixteenth.

Back home, Jennifer & Aine halved eleven, and an excellent par on twelve for a half by Aine kept the scales tipped very much on their side.  Despite a loss on the thirteenth they closed out their match with a win on the fifteenth 5&3.

2-0 to Greystones

The slow pace of play was taking a toll on Sophie & Mary as they lost three holes on the trot from eleven to thirteen but an excellent win on fourteen got them back to three up as they headed for the par five.

In Coollattin, Joyce & Niamh lost sixteen to go back to two up with two to play and a solid half on the seventeenth was enough to close their match 2&1 and the overall tie for Greystones.

When called in, Sophie & Mary were three up through fourteen and Mary & Sandra were all square through sixteen.

Another great performance from Lisa and her team.

Junior Categories and Handicap Management

For All Junior Parents:

Please see a link below to the current gradings for each junior member across our Blue, Red, White and 7Up categories.

Junior Categories – May 2023

Blues play an 18 hole competition every Saturday, while Reds play 9 holes (will be 14 holes during the summer) and both the Whites and 7Ups play 6 holes. The timesheet is set up by category, so a Red for example can only play in the Red competition in the designated time slots with two other Red category members. Please note that Whites and 7Ups cannot mix either.

The boys and girls move between categories as their handicaps reduce:

  1. 7Ups – start with a handicap of 54 and move to Whites when their handicap reduces to 24
  2. Whites – start at 54 and move to Reds when their handicap reduces to 18
  3. Reds – start at 36 and move to Blues when their handicap reduces to 18 (subject to Junior Committee assessment)

The Junior Committee manages handicaps for all 7Ups, Whites and Reds. All handicap cuts are based on completed competition scores only. All Blues receive WHS handicaps and their handicaps are managed accordingly.

Any changes in handicaps and category will be advised in our weekly competition results post which follows every Junior Competition.

Thanks,

The Junior Committee

Win for Irish Junior Foursomes

Congratulations to Peter Anderson and his Irish Junior Foursomes team who advanced through the first round of the competition this afternoon.

This Under 18s, straight foursomes event is handicapped and, even with home advantage, it can be tricky. Pete put out a strong team this afternoon to face a good Milltown Golf Club team.

Our first pair out were Dylan Holmes and Milo Doyle. The Greystones men were giving five shots to their opposition and the match was tight from the get go. Holes were traded over the first 6 holes, at which point the match was back to level. A win on the ninth saw Greystones get their noses in front heading to the back nine but they were giving a shot on ten after which the match was back to friendly. A win on the fifteenth had the game once again back to all square and it took a long range putt by the Milltown pair to half the sixteenth, after Milo had played a fantastic tee shot to eight feet. Another shot had to be given on seventeen and despite a big drive from Dylan, Milltown won the hole. Two pars on the eighteenth saw the match halved.

The scoring for this event is cumulative and our second pair of the in-form Jamie Anderson & equally in-form William O’Riordan.  Shots were once again being given to Milltown, three in this match, but Jamie & William played some excellent golf on the front nine to turn four up and in control.  From there they were relentless and finished five up on their opposition to give a cumulative score of five up to Greystones.

Well done to all involved.

Greystones’ boys make a good impression

Well done to Dylan Holmes & Jamie Anderson who played in the Under 18 Connaught Boys this week.

The event was hosted at Ballinrobe Golf Club with all the top under 18 golfers teeing it up.   The originally planned 36 hole cut was reduced to an 18 hole cut due to the extreme weather conditions earlier in the week.

Both Jamie & Dylan made the cut.  Jamie birdied the 18th to finish 5 over after the first 18 holes while Dylan finished on 6 over after taking an unfortunate 8 on the 8th hole.  On day two Dylan was 1 under par through 9 but a lost ball on the extremely difficult 17th didn’t help his cause and he finished with another 79 for a T31 finish. Jamie shot an impressive 2 over in the second round for a total of 7 over and a T13 finish.

Both lads have another couple of years competing at this level, so the future remains bright.

The event was won by Douglas Golf Club’s, prolific winner, Jack Murphy with a 2 under par total.

No competition next week as the President’s Prize to the men is being played on Saturday, but take advantage of the week off school; course and practice areas are available to use all week subject to the usual guidelines. There are adult competitions but you can usually find plenty of space on the timesheet in the late afternoon, early evening. You can check on BRS for availability or again, ask in the pro shop.
