Teams update Monday 17th August
Monday 17th August
Our Cullen Cup team hosted Newbridge in the second leg of the competition semi final yesterday. Team managers Michael Keating and Mary Hutch team had come away with a 3-2 advantage after the first round last week but still needed a 3-2 win at home to avoid a playoff. First blood went to the home team with Emma Hanley & Diarmuid MacGabhann winning 6&5 after a relentless display of good golf. Quickly after this good news our first match of Polly O’Reilly & Shane O’Connor lost 3&2 in a match where they were giving 6 shots. Ciara Marmion & Barry Davis were giving 6 shots also but played very solidly and brought the next point our way with a 3&2 victory. 2 – 1 to Greystones. Trish Sheil & Walter Gilbert were under the cosh from the off and were 2 down through 13. They won 14 but were giving shots on 15 & 17. Halves on 15 & 16 followed by a fantastic win on the 17th had them all square on the 18th tee. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and the Newbridge team won the 18th with a par. 2 all with one match on the course. Geraldine O’Shea & Eddie Lonergan were 1 up on the 18th tee after a see-saw match. Newbridge won the 18th and the 19th was halved in pars. Newbridge held a great putt on the 20th to win the match and bring a tie play off into effect. Polly O’Reilly & Shane O’Connor were our first pairing on the day and as such it fell to them to settle the match. Giving shots on the 2nd & 3rd Shane knew he would have to hit a good shot on the 1st playoff hole. Shane struck a fantastic 7 iron to around 15 feet and when Newbridge missed left it looked good for the home team. Newbridge hit a poor first chip shot and Polly rolled the Greystones putt to around 2 1/2 feet which Shane holed for a par and a great win. The final will be played in Baltinglass on Sunday 30th August.

The Cup is on display behind the bar !

Teams update 12th July – a 4 from 4 weekend
Sunday 12th July
Sean Hynes and Oliver Frawley and their panel headed to Enniscorthy for the quarter final of the Jimmy Bruen. Up against the current title holders Waterford this was never going to be an easy tie. First out were Con Thomas & Jack Joyce who had to dig deep to come from 3 down after 7 to win 2&1 and put the first point on the board on the Greystones side. This was quickly followed by a second point from Eugene Strong & Cian Gilmore who were out last but finished early winning 5&4. With Pete Murray & Keith Lewis loosing out 4&3 the tension in the air could be cut with a knife as Paul Keane & Ben Hynes finished the 18th all square while behind them Ray McDonnell & Mark Kenny were on the tricky 17th having won the 16th to go 2 up. They held their nerve and won out 2&1. A great team victory. Next up is a day out to Royal Dublin on August 1st to play the semi final and final and hopefully bring a blue pennant back to Greystones.
In the second match of a busy Sunday afternoon we had our Cullen Cup team face Arklow at home in Greystones in the quarter finals of the competition. Mary Hutch’s and Michael Keating’s team saw off the opposition after a bit of a slow start. Polly O’Reilly & Shane O’Connor came from 3 down after 6 to win 4&2, and Emma Hanley & Diarmuid MacGaghann produced a fine 2&1 victory again coming from behind. Trish Sheil & Walter Gilbert brought in the deciding point 3&1. Karen Purcell & Ray Nolan finished 1 up and Ciara Marmion & Eddie Lonergan were called in while playing 18.
Saturday 11th July
Saturday afternoon saw the Under 15’s take on Bray in the last 16 of this Leinster GUI competition. Manager David Fry and assistant manager Philippe Brodeur sent out a strong team against our strongest local rivals. On the day Greystones put up a great performance in front of the home crowd to produce a 5 – 0 victory. Last out but first to put a point of the board was Jack Joyce who won early 6&5, closely followed by Rory Reid who finished his match 5&4. With two points on the board it was a matter of who might bring the 3rd point in first. In the end it was Simon Philips who won on the 17th 3&1, followed by Christopher Lawless and Ben Hynes who both won 2&1. Next up will be a very strong Elm Park team in the quarter finals.
First out on Saturday 11th July were our Minor Ladies team who traveled to play Beechpark in the quarter finals. Anne O’Neill’s team cam up trumps giving Greystones our first win of the weekend. Lisa Croke won on 18 as did Frances Twomey and Geraldine O’Shea. Monica Smith won out 5&4 and Angela Shaw came up against a very strong opponent and lost out on the day 6&5. A very comprehensive victory for the team.
Teams update 10th July
Friday 10th July
Heartache yesterday for our Irish Mixed Foursomes team who played the Leinster quarter finals against Baltinglass. With 3 matches away it was always going to be tough and so it proved. Early on it looked like it was going to be a disaster with all matches down after 3 holes however credit to the team they pulled back. Away in Baltinglass Shane O’Connor & Lisa Croke went down 6&4 but straight away Barry Davis & Ciara Marmion pulled it back to 1 all with a 3&2 victory. Meanwhile in Greystones Barry & Aideen O’Leary won 2 up however Eddie Lonergan & Mary O’Neill lost 2&1 having fought back earlier from 3 down to have the match all square after 14. It came down to the away match of Alan Condren & Geraldine O’Shea who were 1 down playing the 18th and were unfortunate to end up with a tricky chip on the wrong side of the hole. The hole was halved and the match won by Baltinglass. A sad day for all involved, thanks to all the panel and to Jennifer Moore and Pat Gormley who put so much effort into the team this year.

The Greystones Best Cup team team managed by Gerry Browner unfortunately went out of the competition this evening after an epic battle. Kishor Borkhtaria & Pat O’Dowd won the first home point 4&3 and with Maurice Bracken & Dave Madigan loosing on 19th it came down to the final match. Thanks to all the panel and management for their efforts over the campaign.
Better luck for Antti Happonen and his Wicklow Cup team. As defending champions Greystones faced Old Conna at home. A fine victory 4:1 tonight with Jared Nolan & Rory Reid, Louis Brodeur & Ben Hynes, Freddy Happonen & Stephen Corry, and Christopher Lawless & Joe Ennis all winning their matches. Fintan O’Shea and Alan Keane played some fine golf but unfortunately were beaten on the night.

The Greystones Powerscourt Cup team team managed by Robert Clarke and Rod O’Shea had the tough task of playing Glenmalure with 3 matches away on Sunday. With a delayed start in Greystones due to a busy time-sheet the away matches were all but lost by the time the 2 home pairings went out. The home pairs of Barry O’Leary & Louis O’Connor were 1 up and Paul O’Brien & Leo Dalton were 1 down but playing well when they were both called in after 6 holes. The away pairings were John Cogavan & Pat Raftery, David Gillette & John Burke and Alan Hughes and Thenes Van Rooy. Thanks to all for their efforts in terms of practice.

Thursday 18th June
Our Old Conna Seniors team headed to Woodbrook on Wednesday 18th to compete in this event. The format is fourball, better ball with best 4 from 5 pairs to count. Unfortunately Greystones lost out by 7 shots on the day despite some excellent scores. Two exceptional scores in the high fifties for Woodbrook made the difference. Hard luck to Managers Sean Woodcock and David Kelly and to the players on the day : Sean O’Neill & Brian O’Neill, Frank Coleman & Nigel Locke, Nigel Robinson & Hermon O’Farrell, Pat O’Dowd & Paul Cahill, Arthur Fitzharris & Richard Nichols and Pat Mahon & Eddie Prenter.
