April 13, 2024 by Junior Editor

We were delighted to welcome back 42 boys and girls this afternoon for our first Junior Competition of 2024 having had to cancel last week due to Storm Kathleen.

Some great scoring across all of our groups:

  1. JP Lynch 44pts
  2. Cameron McConnell 38pts (back 9)
  3. John O’Boyle 38pts

Reds (9 holes):

  1. Harry Greenan 19pts
  2. Jack Daly 17pts
  3. Sinead Seifried 15pts

Whites (6 holes):

  1. Matthew Byrne 18pts
  2. Annie Dillon 12pts
  3. Eden Stroh 11pts

7Ups:

  1. Hugo Shearer 21pts
  2. Sean Farrell 19pts
  3. Hugo Henley 19pts

Note: All handicap cuts will be posted during the week.

Great to welcome everyone back and to see some new faces. Some phenomenal scoring today in what were very windy conditions. We didn’t hold our prizegiving (as we couldnt locate our Junior locker key!), so please collect your prizes next Saturday.

It was particularly pleasing to see so many boys and girls, and parents, in the clubhouse after the competition. The social aspect of our Junior section is equally as important as our on-course activities, and one which we embrace and encourage.

We look forward to seeing everyone again next Saturday.

Spring Coaching 2024

February 2, 2024 by Junior Editor

Please see the link below to our Spring 2024 coaching for our Junior Reds and Whites from 1pm in Greystones Driving Range starting this Saturday, 3 February 2024 and running for six consecutive Saturdays until 9 March 2024. Please note the times – first of three groups from 1pm. Parents roster also included under each group. Coaching is being provided by Ben and Keith, our two Assistant Professionals.

Junior Coaching – Spring 2024

Thank you to the parents who have offered to help out to ensure the smooth running of coaching sessions and adherence to safeguarding protocols. The plan is that we have two parents with the first group and three parents with the second and third groups each week.

We need to have one parent in the shop at the Driving Range when the boys and girls arrive. This parent needs to check the child in on the attendance list, help to get the money paid (€7 per bucket, thanks again to Karl for the generous discount!) and the child out of the shop and down to the bays at the end of the range. The same parent gets all of the children back into the shop and signs them out as they are collected at the end of the session. All parents need to come into the shops with their child at the start of each coaching sessions and to come into the shop to collect them at the end of the session.

We have to be mindful that the Driving Range is not part of GGC is and is a private, standalone commercial business, so we cannot allow the boys and girls to leave the Driving Range unaccompanied under any circumstances.

The other parents are required at the bays with each monitoring three/four bays. Essentially they just need to ensure:

  • the children are not running up and down between bays and running off down to the shop;
  • when a child is hitting a shot the other child stands out of the bay if sharing;
  • the children do not leave the front of the bay to retrieve a ball on the gravel/grass in the front of the bay;
  • if a child needs the bathroom the “signing in” parent goes with them and waits in the shop. We just need to ensure the child comes back into the range; and
  • at the end of the session all the children are brought back into the shop and wait to be collected.

An Attendance Sheet will be left behind the counter in the shop – could we ask the first Supervisor who arrives for each group to be the parent who remains in the shop while the boys and girls arrive and fill in the Attendance Sheet, which should then be left behind the counter.

I would also encourage as many parents of the Whites and 7-Ups to stay during the sessions to help also.

We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow and kick-starting the new golf season.

Thank you,

Declan Murray & The Junior Committee

Junior Scramble Results – 3 November 2023

November 3, 2023 by Junior Editor

We held our last official Junior Competion of 2023 this afternoon when 42 boys and girls played in our season-ending Junior Scramble in very unseasonal weather…….not a drop of rain fell! Some great golf played, and it is always particularly enjoyable to mix our Blues, Reds and Whites together in what are really fun events.

7Ups Competition – 6 Holes:

  1. Tom Lawlor, Max Mahady & Oscar Maguire
  2. Olivia Holmes, Ben McFadden, Freddie Gormley & Donnacha Cribben

Main Competition – 9 Holes:

  1. Leo Murphy, Alfie O’Reilly & James Lynn
  2. John O’Boyle, Jack Daly & Jack Delmar Anderson
  3. Ruadhán Murray, James Power & Devin Kelly

It was a great day and a fitting end to a truly wonderful Junior Golf year in GGC. It has been brilliant to watch the progress of all of our Juniors this year, in particular all of the Whites and 7Ups.

As ever, we can only host regular competitions with lots of help, so a huge thank you today to Jenny Moore, Helen Murphy (our official photographer!) and Barry Massey (teaching all of the smallies how to do the “Massey Chip”!).

Also to Jackie behind the bar and Ali and Olivia who fed everyone!

And finally, to our 2023 Junior Captains, Isabella and Jamie who again expertly called the results, ably assisted by our Junior Convenor Neil. It was Isabella and Jamie’s last official engagement of the season and they have both been a credit to the Junior Section. Sophie and Dylan have big shoes to fill next year!

Thankfully as Neil said during the prizegiving, this is not the end of the season as our Junior coaching programme continues tomorrow in the Driving Range for Reds and Whites. Please encourage your children to continue playing during the darker winter months, and we look forward to 2024 being another great year of golf for all of our Juniors.

Autumn & Winter Junior Coaching 2023

October 25, 2023 by Junior Editor

Please see link to our Autumn / Winter coaching for our Junior Reds and Whites from 1pm in Greystones Driving Range starting this Saturday, 28 October 2023 and running for six consecutive Saturdays until 2 December 2023. Please note the times – first of three groups from 1pm. Parents roster also included under each group. Coaching is being provided by Ben and Keith, our two Assistant Professionals.

Junior Coaching – Autumn & Winter 2023

As ever, we need parents to help out to ensure the smooth running of coaching sessions – with safeguarding requirements, we need 6 parents for the first group and 8 parents for the second and third groups. The plan is that we have three parents with the first group each week and four parents with the second and third groups each week. We have one parent for the first group, seven for the second group and six for the third group. Ideally each parent who volunteers oversees their group every second week. So we need more volunteers, particularly for the first group. Please PM me if you can spare an hour every second week.

We need to ask the parents to come in with the child at the start and to come into the shop to collect them at the end of the session.

We have to be mindful that the Driving Range is not part of GGC is and is a private business running as a standalone commercial business, so we cannot allow the boys and girls to leave the Driving Range unaccompanied under any circumstances.

The other 2 or 3 parents are required at the bays with each monitoring three/four bays. Essentially they just need to ensure:

  • the children are not running up and down between bays and running off down to the shop;
  • when a child is hitting a shot the other child stands out of the bay if sharing;
  • the children do not leave the front of the bay to retrieve a ball on the gravel/grass in the front of the bay;
  • if a child needs the bathroom the “signing in” parent goes with them and waits in the shop. We just need to ensure the child comes back into the range; and
  • at the end of the session all the children are brought back into the shop and wait to be collected.

We will be holding a second round of Winter & Spring coaching starting in late January / early February 2024 and will be in touch in the New Year in advance.

Thank you,

Declan Murray & The Junior Committee
