Congratulations to all of our winners, and thank you to all of the parents and boys and girls who attended the prizegiving in the Clubhouse after the competition. Our majors are special days and it was great to see everyone after.

A huge thank you to Ciara and Mark, for both your prizes today and your ongoing support for Junior golf in GGC. We have a Junior Section that is the envy of many clubs!

Thank you also to Paul, Jackie and the team behind the bar and also to Ali, Liz, Olivia and the team in the kitchen who fed and watered everybody.

We also had a busy week in the provincial championships. Will O’Riordan was just pipped at the finish line when he was beaten in a play-off for the Munster U18 Boys after shooting a great final round of 2 under par 69, playing his last 6 holes in 3 under par. This followed Will’s 3rd place finish in the Leinster U18 Boys a few weeks ago – great golf Will! Dylan Holmes was tied 22nd, while Jamie Anderson and Toby Murphy also played. And well done to Dylan, Jamie and Will who played for our Mens Senior Cup team today in a great win over Lucan in the Leinster South Area quarter-final.

Isabella Stewart shot a final round of 73 to finish tied 5th in the Munster U18 Girls and Shauna Seifried finished in 12th place after a final round of 79 (Sinead is following you Shauna after a great score today!). Well done ladies!

Up in Tyrone, Ruadhán Murray shot a 77 to finish in 8th place in the Ulster U14 Boys. Ruadhán will make his interprovincial debut in 2 weeks time for the Leinster U14s when they play Ulster. Well done Ruadhán!

Captains Prize for Juniors – Saturday 13 July 2024

July 10, 2024 by Junior Editor

Our Captains Ciara Marmion and Mark McAleer will host their Captain’s Prize to the Juniors this Saturday, 13 July.

Both Ciara and Mark are massive supporters and advocates of our Junior Section, with Mark previously holding the position of Junior Convenor. This is the first of our three majors this season and we are looking to have as many of our juniors playing as possible.

The timesheet is now live. If lines fill up for your category, please contact the pro shop and they will add more lines.

The entry fee is €10 to include food afterwards.

The prize giving will take place at approx 8.30pm in the clubhouse and as ever, it would be great to have a big turnout of both players and parents. Our majors are as much about the social aspect of our extensive Junior golf programme, including for the parents, so please try and make the prize giving.

We won three matches away against a very strong side, with an equally impressive home performance. Well done to Dylan, Jamie, Will, Toby, Jack, Milo, Ruadhán and Mark! Even the management team of Karl and Peter were smiling last night, so well done guys and also to Michael who looked after the boys playing at home.

Best of luck to Shauna, Isabella, Dylan, Jamie, Will and Milo who are all playing in the Leinster Boys and Girls U18 Amateur Open Championship in Royal Tara tomorrow – play well guys!

And finally, best of luck to everyone playing in the Flogas Irish Junior Open which we are hosting in Greystones tomorrow.

Junior Girls Match v Elm Park

June 18, 2024 by Junior Editor

Our Junior girls played a match against Elm Park yesterday.

Aoife Dempsey & Chloe Creedon played at home and Jane Lumley & Doireann Dowdall played in Elm Park in four singles matches.

Aoife & Chloe got off to strong starts and while they faced stiff opposition from the lower handicapped visitors, both were 3 up at the turn. Meanwhile in Elm Park, Doireann got off to a very steady start, up early in her match while Jane was swapping holes with her opposition. At the turn Doireann was 2 up and Jane 1 down. It’s worth saying that Doireann was playing against Kate Fleming, playing off 3. Kate had been playing in The Womens Irish Amateur championships in Woodbrook during the week and had played 18 holes there earlier in the day. I greatly admire her support for junior golf in her club to come back and play in our match. Her ball striking was superb but Doireann also played beautiful golf and was able to use her ‘shots received’ very well.

In Greystones, after halving a number of holes Aoife teed off on 15 still 3 up. Both players found the thick rough down the right but Aoife’s clever course management skills paid off and she found herself on the green with little damage done and with her opponent unable to halve, the match was over – a 4&3 win.

Having to give an in-form Chloe a shot a hole was always going to be difficult and despite her best efforts the Elm Park girl was still 3 down after 15. A lovely tee shot on 16 set Chloe up to win the hole and close out the match 4&2.

On 12th tee in Elm Park Doireann was 2 up, and after a beautiful drive and a superb 2nd to 20 feet  she went 3 up as Kate could only match her par while giving a shot. Also on 12 Jane found herself 2 down but made an excellent up & down par to go back to 1 down. On 13 her tee shot found trees right but she played a superb recovery shot to set up a nett par and a win to go back to all square.

At this stage the results had come in from Greystones and after Jane had teed off 14th we could see Doireann & Kate standing off to one side, their match having finished on 15.

A 3.5-.05 win for Greystones! Excellent golf played on both sides and played in good sporting fashion. Many thanks to Helen Creedon for looking after the home team and to June O’Brien in Elm Park for their hospitality.
