Well done to all in very difficult conditions! Please collect your prize next week.

Our Under-15 boys team play the first leg of their Leinster Final against Blainroe GC away at 2pm next Saturday, 23 September, followed by the home leg two weeks later in Greystones GC on 7 October. The boys had a great win at home last Sunday against New Forrest by 2.5 to 0.5 points. Following the disappointment of the last few years, including losing two finals, we need as much support as we can!

Under 15 Boys move to Leinster Final

Congratulations to team manager Ben Crowley and his squad who beat a strong New Forest side this afternoon to get to the Leinster final which will take place later this month.

Ben and his team will face local rivals, Blainroe who saw off The Island in their semi final yesterday.  The final will be over two legs, one home and one away (dates to be confirmed).

Out first today was Conor Dignam who was giving six shots to his opponent.  Conor stormed into a three hole lead after just three holes and turned two up, despite a loss on the ninth. Conor halved the tenth, while giving a shot, and his win with a par on the eleventh was followed by another good win on eight. His New Forest opponent won thirteen but it was too little too late for him unfortunately and Conor closed out the match with wins on fourteen and fifteen by a margin of 5&3.

Number two today was Ruadhán Murray. Ruadhán was giving eight shots which is never easy and found himself two behind after losses on six and seven. He stuck to his guns however and dug out three excellent wins in a row from the eighth to get ahead for the first time in the match. The back nine was cat and mouse. Ruadhán lost twelve, giving a shot but won fourteen with a par. He was giving a shot on fifteen also which went to New Forest to bring the match back to all square. Sixteen was halved in pars but seventeen, another shot hole, went to the visitors and Ruadhán found himself dormie one down.

The anchorman for the team this afternoon was the ever dependable Toby Murphy.  Toby was giving two shots to his opponent and was struggling a bit perhaps with the flat stick early on in his round, turning one down.  He was giving a shot on the tenth but Toby made par which was enough to halve the hole. Pars on eleven and twelve got him ahead for the first time since the second tee box. His choice to hit driver on thirteen nearly cost him the hole but a good putt from six feet for bogey earned him a half and fourteen was also halved, this time in par. A birdie on fifteen got Toby to two ahead with three to play, sixteen was halved in par and another par on seventeen was enough to seal the match 2&1and the tie for Greystones.

Ruadhán had won eighteen to get his match all square when called in.

Congratulations to Ben and his squad.

Well done to all of our prize winners in our third and final major of 2023, President Marguerite’s Prize for the Juniors, with Emma Haugh taking home the girls prize with a great score of 34pts and John Byrne winning the boys prize with an outstanding score of 40pts (and just pipping Tom Murphy on the back 9). Will O’Riordan won the gross with a great level par round of 69.

A massive thank you to our President, Marguerite, for her support of the Junior section in GGC and her very generous prizes today. We had a record 61 boys and girls playing in a Junior major and Marguerite was on the first tee to see every group off. It was great to see so many parents at the prize giving, with the results again expertly called by our Junior Girls Captain, Isabella, and our Junior Boys Captain, Jamie.

A big thank you to Ali, Liz and the catering team for feeding everybody, and to Paul and Alan behind the bar.

And to Anto, Martin, Sinead and John for getting all of the boys and girls off on time and marking the cards. As always, we can only run successful competitons with the help of parents!

We host our last Junior major of the season, President Marguerite Hamill’s Prize for the Junior girls and boys, next Saturday. Timesheet will go live on Tuesday, so let’s try and get a big turn-out for Marguerite who is looking forward to seeing everyone in action.

We had a long update last week when we were delighted to list out some of the great achievements of our Junior boys and girls in recent inter-club competitions. Unfortunately this week we fell just short of winning a Green Pennant when Peter Anderson and Karl Holmes’ incredible Fred Daly team came ever so close to beating Royal Portrush in the final in Castletroy GC. It was a phenomenal achievement to get to the final as we beat the very fancied Douglas GC in the quarter-finals. Having got the better of Lurgan GC in the morning semi-final, it just wasn’t to be against Portrush who won by the slimmest of margins, 3 matches to 2. We also came up short against Monkstown GC in the quarter-final of the All-Ireland Foursomes on Tuesday afternoon, who went on to lose in the final against Baltinglass GC. The standard of golf in Castletroy was breathtaking and we are incredibly proud of our ten man panel of Dylan, Jamie, Toby, Jack, Stephen, Will, Marc, Milo, Ruadhán and Conor. Your time will come guys!

The Junior Committee would like to say a big thank you to Pete and Karl, and Team Manager Michael Joyce, for the fantastic achievement of winning two Leinster South pennants and getting to two All-Ireland finals this year. We are luckly to have people who are so dedicted, committed and passionate about junior golf in GGC and put in a huge amount of work behind the scenes.

See you all next Saturday

Congrats to all of our winners on some great scoring today in pretty wet conditions, and to Gar and Tom on moving categories – great golf guys! Please collect your prize next week if you missed the prizegiving.

It has been a great season for our Junior section and we broke our 2023 attendance record today with 62 boys and girls playing. The Junior Committee believes this is the most juniors to ever play in a Saturday competition in GGC in our 128 year history!

The Week Just Gone…..

It was another momentous week for the Junior Section with Dylan Holmes and our Boys Junior Captain, Jamie Anderson, leading the charge as the Leinster U-18 team were crowned 2023 All-Ireland Provincial Champions. Dylan and Jamie played 6 matches each, including winning 2.5 points from the three foursomes matches they played together. Cousins in arms!

Not to be outdone by our “senior” juniors, our Junior Sixes team of Aoife Dempsey, Jane Lumley, Emma Haugh, John O’Boyle, James Long and Jack Daly, under the astute management of Martin Haugh, qualified for the All-Ireland finals which take place at Grange Golf Club on 17 September. Brilliant work guys!

And then to cap all of this off, Emma Haugh won the 2023 Wicklow Girls on Thursday with a great score of 41 points. Emma is the first Greystones winner in the second year of what we hope will turn into a big Girls event, with Shauna Siefried placing second and Sophie Lumley just behind in third. Well done ladies on filling the podium!

Then finally, our U-15 Boys team of Toby Murphy, Ruadhán Murray and Conor Dignam put in a great performance to beat Stackstown 3-0 to reach the semi-finals and keep the dream alive for another year. An impressive win from all three under the youthful and energetic management team of Ben Crowley and last years Junior Boys Captain, George O’Brien.

And the Week Ahead……

As we reach the business end of the golf season, we have a massive week ahead.

Toby Murphy, Will O’Riordan and Jack McGovern tee-off tomorrow when our Mens Junior Cup team play Monkstown GC in the All-Ireland quarter-finals in Youghal GC with a 12.00 tee time. Three juniors starting in a five-man team! The very best of luck lads.

Then on Tuesday, our 10-man squad, ably led by our star U-18 interprovincials Dylan and Jamie, play the All-Ireland quarter-finals of both the Fred Daly (Boys U-18 at 9.10) and Irish Junior Foresomes (Boys U-18 at 13.27) at Castletroy GC in Limerick. Best of luck to Dylan, Jamie, Toby, Jack, Will, Stephen, Marc, Milo, Conor and Ruadhán. With Karl Holmes and Peter Anderson managing both squads, this is a fantastic achievement for everyone at GGC as we chase a Green pennant on two fronts.

Well done to all of our prize winners in our second major of 2023, the Lady and Mens Captains Prize, with the main Blues prize won by Dylan Cavazza who had a great score of 40 points in very blustery conditions. We had 53 boys and girls playing and there was a great atmosphere in the Clubhouse after for food and the prizegiving.

A huge thank you to our Lady Captain, Celine, and our Men’s Captain, John for their support of the Junior section in GGC. After a busy morning watching three of our Juniors – Toby, Will and Jack – play brilliant golf for our victorious Mens Junior Cup team in Wicklow GC in the Leinster South Final, they spent the afternoon on the first tee seeing all 53 boys and girls out to play, before presenting the very generous prizes which they gave to each category, with the results expertly called by our Junior Girls Captain, Isabella, and our Junior Boys Captain, Jamie.

A big thank you to Ali, Liz, Olivia and the catering team for feeding everybody, and to Paul and Conor behind the bar.

Finally, thank you to Karl who gave the brilliant prizes for our draw – four Shane Lowry golf balls, a signed glove and hat and signed hats from Billy Horshel, Alex Noren and World Number 6 Xander Shauffele (well done Sal Maxwell!).
