Mixed Foursomes defeat Druids Heath

Our Irish Mixed Foursomes team progressed to the last four of the Leinster South Area today defeating Druids Heath by 2. 5 to 1.5.

Regina Barry and Paul Keane selected the following team, at home were Des Hickey and Helen Creedon along with Alan Keane and Geraldine O’Shea. Away from home were Ray Nolan and Sandra Cotter along with Kevin Barry and Bernadette McGowan.

Des and Helen established a healthy early lead winning their first 5 holes and despite the Druids Heath pair winning three holes before the turn Helen and Des ran out comfortable 5 & 4 winners.

Our other home pair Geraldine and Alan had a real to and fro match. 2 up after four, then 2 down after eight. They won the 9th to be one down at the turn. Druids Heath regained there 2 hole lead on ten. Alan and Geraldine then turned the screw and won 5 of their next 6 holes to win 3 & 2.

Away in Druids Heath our second pair out were Bernadette and Kevin. They won the 1st hole but then ran into a run of wins by their opposition and found themselves 5 down after 9. The Druids pair did not ease up and finished off the match on the 13th by a margin of 6 & 5.

Sandra and Ray were off to a flier like Helen and Des and were 4 up after four. The Druids pair fought back well to be only one down after 12 holes. Ray and Sandra then put the tie beyond Druids by winning 13 & 15 which gave Greystones the half point they needed to progress.

Congratulations to Regina and Paul and their team. Next up will be Blainroe or Elm Park before the 18th August.

Fred Daly earn another pennant

Our Fred Daly team have got used to playing away from home this year. Blainroe, Bray and Carton House have all had home advantage against Peter Anderson’s team so far.

So the final on a neutral venue would hold no fears for the team. The opponents were Stackstown GC who had defeated Milltown, Grange and Castle on their way to the Leinster South Final.

Peter named the following team:

Will O’Riordan, Toby Murphy, Jamie Anderson, Dylan Holmes and Jack McGovern.

Will lead the team out and after swapping a couple of holes with his opponent in the first three he then gained a lead by winning 4,5 and 6 to go 3 up and was still 3 up after 9 holes.

Toby was next out and he got off to a great start and was 3 up through 6 holes. Despite losing 7 and 8 Toby got back to two up by winning the 9th.

Jamie was on the 1st tee next and despite winning the first found himself one down after 4 holes. Jamie won two of the next 4 and halved 9 to be level at the half way point.

Dylan was out in 4th place and got off to a dream start and was 5 up after just 5 holes. Dylan’s opponent did get one hole back before the turn for Dylan to be 4 up.

Jack had the anchor role and after a sticky start, 3 down after 4, he fought back by reeling 3 wins in a row on 5,6 and 7. His Stackstown opponent then won 8 and was 1 up after 9 holes.

Will’s opponent won 10 to get back to 2 down. A couple of halved holes followed before Will went 3 up. His opponent then won 2 in a row before Will won 16 to be dormie 2. Stackstown then won the par 3 17th after Will’s ball ran back off the green into the water. Dormie one. Will then won the 18th to win his match 2 up. One-Nil to Greystones.

Toby extended his lead quickly on the back 9 winning 11,12 and 13 to be dormie 5 up. His opposition won 14 and 15 to extend the match until Toby finished it on 16 with a win to succeed 4 & 2. Two-Nil to Greystones.

Dylan lost the 10th to be 3 up. Like Toby Dylan then won 3 in succession on 12, 13 and 14 to close out his match 6 & 4. Three-Nil to Greystones.

Jamie won 10 & 11 to go 2 up but his opponent immediately got one back on 12. Jamie won 14 & 17 to finish off his game 3 & 1.  Four – Nil to Greystones.

Jack found himself two down after 12 holes but mounted a comeback winning 14 and 15 to get back level with his opponent. Jack was then called in as the overall tie was decided. Four and a half to half a point to Greystones.

Congratulations to Pete Anderson and all the squad and helpers on winning another pennant for the club.

Thank you to Captain Mark, our pro David Lewis and Clifford Murphy for all the photos.

Under 15’s defeat Wicklow

Our Boys under 15 team under the management of George O’Brien were taking on Wicklow GC in the second round at home on Monday evening.

Our team was Ruadhan Murray, Conor Dignam and John O’Boyle.

Ruadhan got off to a flying start and was three up after three holes and despite his opponent pulling two holes back on 5 & 6 Ruadhan quickly reestablished his three up lead after nine holes.

Conor found himself two down after 2 holes but quickly recovered to be level after 4. Despite losing the 6th Conor was one up heading down the lane.

John like Ruadhan also got off to a quick start and was 2 up after 4 holes. John swapped a couple of holes with his opponent and was still 2 up at the turn.

John quickly added 4 wins in a row on the back nine and won 6 & 5. One nil to Greystones.

In similar fashion Conor won 4 of the first 5 holes on the back nine to secure the second point 5 & 4.

Ruadhan won the 10th to go 4 up. His Wicklow opponent the 12th,13th and 14th to close the gap to one hole. Ruadhan then showed great maturity to win 16 & 17 to win his match 3 & 1 and give Greystones a 3-0 win.

Congratulations to George and his team on a convincing win. The next round will be against Castle GC or Blainroe and will have to be played by 18th August.

Joy for Barton Cup, Despair for Leinster Men’s Fourball

Our Barton Cup and Leinster Men’s Fourball teams were both taking part in last 16 matches today.

Barton Cup

First up was Ray McDonnells Barton team who were up against the K Club. Greystones had home advantage so had three matches at home and 2 away. Ray selected the following team:

Home: Chris Boylan and Keith McDonnell, Alan Keane and Ruadhán Murray, Diarmaid MacGabhann

Away: Ollie Nolan and Kevin Barry, Shane Nolan and Craig Hazelton.

Chris and Keith led off at home and were one down early on but made a significant move by winning 6, 7 and 8 to be two up after 9.

Alan and Ruadhán got into an early lead and were 2 up after 5 holes however the opposition then won 7 & 8. The Greystones pair then restored their 2 up lead by winning 9 and 10.

Diarmaid and Henry were in a to and fro match winning 3 holes and losing 2 to make the turn at one up.

Away from home where the team were being looked after by Paul Keane the first away were Ollie and Kevin. After 6 holes the Greystones pair were one up and maintained that lead after 9.

Shane and Craig were up against it early on and were 3 down after 8 holes but then got two holes back winning 9 and 10.

Back home Keith and Chris kept the pressure on their opposition by 10 & 11 to be 4 up. Both pairs then traded two wins each over the next 4 holes for the Greystones lads to claim the first point 4&3.

Ruadhán and Alan were in a dogfight after the K Club pair won 11 & 12 to be all square. Greystones won 13 and the K Club pair won 16 for the match to be all square. Greystones won 17 when the opposition missed a shortish putt. Ruadhán hit a long drive down the right and when the K club put their ball in the right hand bunker Alan produced a fine shot close to the pin. When the opposition failed to hole their bunker shot they conceded the match. 2-0.

At this point Henry and Diarmaid were one down standing on the 18th tee. Away Kevin and Ollie were dormie 3 up and Shane and Craig had mounted a fightback and were all square after 15.

After a fine drives by Henry and the opposition the K Club pair made the green but had a tricky putt from the top of the green. Diarmaid hit a lovely shot in very close but the putt had a big break. A 3 putt from the K Club pair and we were off up to the 19th.

Away Ollie and Kevin were now playing 18 one up. Shane and Ollie were now one up after 16.

As Diarmaid was hitting his shot to the 19th green word was coming through that Ollie and Kevin were on the last hole in 3 and were looking good. Diarmaid hit a shot on 19 which was even closer than his 1st hole. The opposition also made the green. As the players made their way pass the ladies tees there was a shout of joy from Ray McDonnell as word came that Ollie and Kevin had won their match on 18. At this point Shane and Craig along with Henry and Diarmaid were called in which resulted in a 4-1 win. Congratulations to Ray and his team who are now in the quarter finals. The next opposition are the Castle GC and the match has to be played by 11th August.

Leinster Men’s Fourball

Gerry Browner’s Leinster Men’s Fourball were also in a last 16 match against Woodbrook were we had home advantage in the event of a playoff. At home Michael Whelan and Macdara Cummins were with Andy Nolan and Brook Mangan. Away from home Dermot Barry and John Smith were with Michael O’Neill and Conor Lucey. The away team were being looked after by John Browner.

Macdara and Michael were one down early on but then won two holes midway through the front 9 but lost the 9th to be all square. Andy and Brook were also down early on, 2 down through 5, but fought back with 4 holes won in the next 6 which left them 2 up through 11.

Away from home Dermot and John were also under pressure early on and found themselves 3 down after 5 holes. They then won 6 & 8 but lost 9 to be 2 down at the turn. Michael and Conor got off to a flier winning the first two holes. Woodbrook fought straight back winning the 4th and 5th. Greystones snuck ahead again on the 6th. Woodbrook however seized control then by winning 8,9 and 10 to go 2 up.

Back in Greystones Michael and Macdara were in a ding dong match with holes being swapped between the two pairs. Greystones won 12, 14 and 16 while Woodbrook won 11, 13 and 17. The last hole was halved so both teams get half a point each.

Brook and Andy won and lost a hole to remain 2 up through 15 holes.

In Woodbrook, John and Dermot went 3 down at the 11th. The Greystones pair won 12 and 14 but wins for Woodbrook on 13 and 15 gave them the win 3&2. In the 2nd match in Woodbrook, the home pair kept the pressure on with wins on 12 and 13 to go 4 up and a couple of halved holes gave them the point they needed to progress to the next round.

Andy and Brook were called in at dormie 2 up at this point.

Commiserations to Gerry Browner and his team.

Pierce Purcell pipped in play-off

Our Pierce Purcell team were up against Ballinascorney Golf Club in the latest round of matches. Jim Wood’s team had 2 matches away and 2 at home but importantly Ballinascorney had the home draw in the case of a playoff.

At home representing Greystones were Keith McDonnell with Rob Tierney and Henry Gilbert with Dermot Barry who were being looked after by Gerry Browner. Away from home were Robert Clarke with Colm O’Neill and Stephen O’Brien with Shane Power. Jim Wood was looking after things away from home.

On a dull cool evening brightened by Rob Tierney’s colourful golf shoes (see photos) the home team got off to great starts and Keith and Rob were 3 up at the turn and Henry and Dermot were in complete control being 5 up heading to the tenth tee.

Away from home things were much tighter. Colm and Robert were all square after 9 while Stephen and Shane were just the one down.

Henry and Dermot picked up the first point on the 14th soon followed by Rob and Keith winning on 17 after a spirited comeback by their opponents. So 2-0 to Greystones and a wait for results from Ballinascorney. It was looking promising as Rob and Colm were all square heading down 18 needing just a half to progress. However Ballinascorney forced a win on 18. 2-1 now. Stephen and Shane were now dormie 2 down needing two wins to get that vital half point, again Ballinascorney prevailed and won 3&1.

Colm and Robert were our nominated pair for the playoff and took on their opponents on their 19th hole of the day. Again Ballinascorney prevailed on progress to the next round.

Commiserations to Jim and his team on what was a dramatic campaign involving a reinstatement to the competition, a playoff win and defeat.

Walty /Ray lost 2&1

Tom/Vincent lost 3&2

Cathal/Jerry lost on 18

Peter/Eddie lost 3&2

Kevin/Sean lost 2&1
