On a typical Irish summers day of wind and rain our Old Conna Seniors team were talking part in the 2024 finals day.

The other teams taking part were Bray, Druids Heath and Milltown. The format is 6 pairs from each club playing Fourball better ball stableford. The team total consists of the best 5 scores from the 6 cards.

Pete Murray was in charge of the team with assistance from Paul Keane on the day as co manager Dermot Whiston was away in sunnier climes.

The following team was selected:

Michael Bolton & Tom Creed

Michael Whelan & John Burke

Billy Byrne & Brian O’Connor

Colin Watchorn & Chuck Tarter

Pete Murray & Joe Grennan

Jerry Teehan & Andy Nolan.

After a long day the Greystones pairs produced the following scores.

Michael and Tom 48 pts

Michael and John 45 pts

Billy and Brian 46 pts

Colin and Chuck 42 pts

Pete and Joe 43 pts

Jerry and Andy 42 pts

This gave the team an overall total of 224 and a winning margin of 15 points. Both Druids Heath and Milltown finished on 209 while Bray had a score of 202.

Everybody would like to extend our thanks to Old Conna GC for running a great tournament.

So congratulations to Dermot, Pete and all the players who took part over the whole year. 3 in a row!!!!

Mixed Foursomes into Leinster South Final

On a bright blustery day our Irish Mixed Foursomes team were talking part in the Leinster South semi-final against Blainroe GC. There was to be 2 matches in each venue and in the event of a playoff it would be played in Blainroe. Regina Barry was looking after affairs in Greystones while Paul Keane was in charge away from home.

At home Des Hickey and Helen Creedon were out first followed by Alan Keane and Geraldine O’Shea. Away we had Walter Gilbert with Aine O’Rourke and Ray Nolan with Sandra Cotter.

Both pairs at home were ahead at the turn, Helen and Des 3 up and Geraldine and Alan were one up.

Away from home Sandra and Ray were  2 down after 9 while Aine and Walter were 2 up also after 9. So things were looking good but still a lot of golf to play.

Des and Helen extended their lead to 4 on ten but the Blainroe came back hard winning three on the bounce at 11,12 and 13.

Alan and Geraldine were pegged back to all square on ten but then won 12 and 13 to lead by 2.

In Blainroe Ray and Sandra’s opponents extended their lead to 3 after 10 holes. The Greystones pair won 12 but lost 14 to be 3 down again. Walter and Aine won 10 and 11 to go four up. The Blainroe combination immediately came back with wins on 12, 13 and 14 to get back within one hole.

Des and Helen won 14, lost 15 and halved 16 to remain one up. At this point Ray and Sandra were beaten 4 & 2 when Blainroe won on 16. One nil to Blainroe.

Des hit a fine drive down 17 while the opposition put it in the right hand bunker. Helen hit a fine shot onto the green putting the pressure on the Blainroe pair. They left it in the bunker and despite a fine third shot Greystones closed out the match 2 & 1. One all.

Geraldine and Alan had now got to the 17th one up. Both pairs were down the right but Greystones were unable to go for the green. While Geraldine played out to the fairway Blainroe went for the green and came up short in the water. Alan then hit the green in 3.

While all this was going on Aine and Walter came down the 18th in Blainroe one up and won the 18th to win 2 up. Two one to Greystones.

All we needed was a half point now and Geraldine and provided that with a half on 17 which guaranteed the half point.

So 2.5 to 1.5 in favour of Greystones.

Congratulations to Regina, Paul and all the team on getting to another final for the club.

The Leinster South final will be on Sunday 1st September with time and venue to be confirmed.

Under 15’s storm the Castle

George O’Brien brought his team to Castle GC this morning in what looked like a very tough assignment.

Dylan Cavazza, Ollie Packman and Ruadhan Murray were selected by George for the match.

Dylan got off to a blistering start winning his first three holes. After a couple of shared holes Dylan got back on the winning trail and won 4 in a from the 6th to the 9th. He did not stand on ceremony and finished off his match by taking the 11th hole to win 8 & 7. One nil to Greystones.

The Castle player took an early lead against Ruadhan but he recovered quickly winning the 5th and 7th to go one up. Castle returned to level with a win on the 9th. After a couple of halved holes at the start of the back 9 it became a to and fro affair with both players winning 2 holes each and were still all square after 15 holes. Ruadhan got himself ahead again by winning the 16th.

Ollie Packman was making his debut for the club today and despite an early blitz from his opponent, who won the first two holes, Ollie settled into the match and won 6 and 7 to get back to all square. He then took the lead on 11. His opponent fought back by winning 15 to level the match again. Ollie then won 16 and 17 to close out the match 2 & 1. A fine win on his debut.

This made it two nil and Ruadhan was called in at one up after 16.

Congratulations to George and his team who are now into the last 8. Their next opponents will be either Tulfarris or Newbridge.

Tough day at the Castle for Barton team.

Our Barton Cup team were up against Castle GC in their last 8 match on Sunday afternoon.

Castle had the home advantage of 3 matches at home and 2 in Greystones. Ray McDonnell had selected the following team:

At home Chris Boylan/Keith McDonnell and Alan Keane/Ruadhan Murray while away Ollie Nolan/Kevin Barry, Shane Nolan/Craig Hazelton and Diarmaid MacGabhann/Henry Gilbert.

At home Chris and Keith got off to and were 5 up after 9 holes. Alan and Ruadhan were also in good position at the turn as they were 2 up on their opposition.

Away from Ollie and Kevin were 2 down early on but fought back well to be 1 up as they headed to the tenth. Shane and Craig were up against it early on but after winning the 8th were 3 down heading to the back nine. Diarmaid and Henry had their backs against the wall also after a difficult start which left them 5 down after 5 holes.

Meanwhile at home Chris and Keith kept the pressure on their opponents by winning the tenth and they confirmed Greystones first point when they won the 12th to win 7&6.

Alan and Ruadhan’s opposition fought back to be level after winning 10 and 14.

Castle quickly got two points on the board when Henry and Diarmaid were beaten on the 11th and Shane and Craig lost on 13.

Ruadhan and Alan continued to battle and won the 15th to go back to one up.

Back in Castle GC Ollie and Kevin extended their lead on 11 to 2 up. However there was plenty of golf left to play. Two great approach shots by the Castle on 12 & 13 led to two wins and the match was all square. The par 4 14th was halved after a fine pitch shot from Kevin. From there Castle GC won 15, 16 and 17 to win 3&1 and progress to the next round. Unfortunately Alan and Ruadhan despite winning 16 to go dormie two up were called in.

Congratulations to Ray and his panel on a great campaign and I’m sure they will be back again next year.

Senior Cup Success for Greystones

On a beautiful sunny day our Senior Cup team were hoping to have a long day ahead of them.

First up were Blainroe in the semi final. The format was five singles matches with first to three points advancing to the area final in the afternoon. Karl Holmes selected the following team David Byrne, Alan Condren, Dylan Holmes, Darren McCormack and Jamie Anderson.

Alan produced the first point winning 7 & 6. Another point followed when Dylan won 4 & 3. The final was within touching distance. Jamie lost his match 4 & 3. Now 2-1.

Darren had battled back from 3 down to be all square at the turn. However he was two down after 14. Meanwhile David had been in a to and fro battle where there was never more than two holes between the pair. David closed out the match and the tie by winning the 18th to go 2 up. At this point Darren was called in from the 15th at 2 down.

So the team were through to the final where regular opponents Dun Laoghaire awaited.

A change in personell and order were made and the following team represented Greystones in the final: Jamie Anderson, David Byrne, Alan Condren, Dylan Holmes and Will O’Riordan.

This was always destined to be a close and hard fought encounter and so it proved to be.

At the half way point Jamie was 4 down, David 2 up, Alan 1 down, Dylan 3 up and Will all square. As it stood the match was level and it was all to play for on the back nine.

Jamie started his fightback with wins on 10, 11 and 13 to get back to one down. He kept the pressure on his opponent and finally got back to all square on the 18th.

While Jamie went to the 19th David who had been pegged back to one up after 15 was playing the 18th and was one up. Both David and his opponent hit great drives and approach shots to the 18th. At this point word filtered back that Jamie had won on 19 to put Greystones one nil up. David went close with his birdie attempt but his opponent also missed to give Greystones their second point. The blue pennant was tantalisingly close.

Dylan was 3 up after 14 holes but opponent kept fighting and had got it back to one down after 17. Will  had been all square after 12 and after a succession of halved holes he edged ahead on 17.

At this point Alan was playing 18 and was one up. Alan and his opponent both hit fine drives and approach shots to the green. The Dun Laoghaire man needed to win the hole to extend the match. He missed the put and conceded the match to Alan. So that was 3-0 and another pennant for the club. Dylan and Will were both called in while one up.

Congratulations to Karl and all the players and assistants who have contributed throughout the year. Thank you to the caddies today Craig McCormack, Peter Anderson, Dan O’Byrne, Eddie Lonergan, Adam Packman and Ray Crotty.

It was great to see so many supporters there today and just to mark your card the All Ireland finals will be in Carlow from 28th to 31st August. Further details will be forthcoming when times and dates are confirmed.
