Pierce Purcell team live to fight another day

Jim Wood with the assistance of John Burke sent his Pierce Purcell team out to take on Straffan. At home Michael Joyce was paired with Shane Power while Robert Clarke joined Colm O’Neill. Away from home Rob Tierney was with Stephen O’Brien and Gavan McGirr joined Neil Lawless. It turned out to be a tough day at the office with Straffan edging ahead overall at the half way point.

Straffan went further ahead as the evening progressed and won the match 3.5 to 0.5 or so it seemed. The drama was not over as it emerged that Straffan had erred with their handicaps and Golf Ireland awarded the match to Greystones. An unusual way to get through to the next round but hopefully the team can use this piece of luck and go on a run in this competition.

The match results were as follows:

Home

Robert Clarke/Colm O’Neill list 2&1

Michael Joyce/Shane Power lost 6&5

Away

Gavan McGirr/Neil Lawless list 5&3

Rob Tierney/Stephen O’Brien were 2 up through 15 when called in.

Junior Cup defeated by Hermitage

Ray Crotty’s Junior Cup team took to the course on Sunday to play Hermitage Golf Club. Hopes were high with a home draw meaning we had 3 matches at home and 2 away.

There was early change to the team when Chris Lawless had to withdraw from the team. This resulted in Milo Doyle changing from away to home and Brian Frawley replacing Milo away.

At the half way point things were looking good with both George O’Brien and Brian Frawley both ahead and Chris Boylan ahead at home. Diarmaid MacGabhann and Milo Doyle were in arrears at the turn but hopeful of a turn around on the back nine.

However nothing is certain in golf and while Chris and George both won their games well Hermitage proved too strong on the day and ran out 3-2 winners.

Results were as follows:

Home

Milo Doyle lost 2&1

Diarmaid MacGabhann lost 5&4

Chris Boylan won 3&1

Brian Frawley lost on 18

George O’Brien won 4&3

Commiserations to Ray and the whole panel. We are sure Ray will be planning for 2025 already.

Leinster Men’s Trophy ease past Powerscourt

Mark Byrne with the assistance of his brother Anthony sent his Leinster Men’s Trophy (formerly Metropolitan) team out in their 2nd round match against Powerscourt. Today we had the home advantage of 4 matches at home and 3 away.

On a beautiful sunny day with a stiff breeze from the north Keith McDonnell led the team out at home and was in a strong position of 3 up after 9. Second out was Eddie Davis and he took was in a similar position of 3 up through 9. The youngest member of the team was up next and Ruadhan Murray was 2 up at the turn. Last up at home was Henry Gilbert, this was a much tighter affair and Henry turned 1 down.

Away from home Fergal Duffy was level, Paul Keane 1 down and Peter Nolan was 6 (yes 6) up all through 9.

So at the turn the overall match was still close. However Greystones turned on the style from there on.

Peter finished his game off quickly 8&6. Next to finish was Eddie winning 4&3 followed by Keith winning 2&1 despite his opponent fighting back. Ruadhan then clinched the winning points on 16 3&2. The remaining matches were called in with Henry 2 up through 15, Fergal all square through 14 and Paul 2 up through 14.

Final result was 5.5 to 1.5 in favour of Greystones. On to the 3rd round for Mark Byrne and his team.

Barton and Bruen teams advance

On a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon our Jimmy Bruen and Barton Cup teams got their 2024 campaigns underway.

First up was the Jimmy Bruen under the joint manager of Michael Keating and Gerry Kenny. In what was expected to be a difficult tie against Dun Laoghaire the Greystones team were fast out of the blocks. The two away pairs (Derek O’Regan/Fergal Duffy and Conor McAleer/Peter Nolan) developed early leads and were never caught. At home Collie Dunne and Rob Tierney again went ahead early on in the round and ran out comfortable winners by 5&4. Brian Murray and Kevin Barry were level through 9 and rattled off 5 wins in a row to win 5&4 also. So a final result of 3.5 to 0.5 in favour of Greystones.

Match results as follows:

Home

  • Collie Dunne/Rob Tierney won 5&4
  • Brian Murray/Kevin Barry won 5&4

Away

  • Conor McAleer/Peter Nolan won 6&5
  • Derek O’Regan/Fergal Duffy 5 up through 12 when called in.

Ray McDonnells Barton Cup team were next up and had an equally impressive win against Macreddin. With 3 matches away and 2 at home it can be a tricky thing to get through to the next round. Again our two matches got up early in their matches, both pairs birdieing the 1st, and were never headed by their opponents. Away from home it was a bit of a mixed bag. Match one were ahead early and kept their opponents at arms length staying ahead until they were called in after 14 holes. Match two got into an early lead but we’re then hit by run of losses which resulted in defeat on 15. Match 3 was a very comfortable affair, despite being all square through 5 they then won 6 of the next 9 hole to win on 14.

Match results as follows

Home

  • Chris Boylan/Keith McDonnell won 6&5
  • Eddie Lonergan/Shane Power won 3&2

Away

  • Alan Keane/Ruadhan Murray 2 up through 14 when called in
  • Ray Crotty/Ollie Nolan lost 4&3
  • Craig Hazelton/Shane Nolan won 6&4

Congratulations to both teams and keep an eye out for the next round of matches.

Local bragging rights go to Delgany

On Friday afternoon Joe O’Brien brought his Super Seniors side to Delgany hoping to get their campaign on track after losing the first match against Killeen.

Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and Delgany powered into early big leads in 3 of the matches. Delgany ran out 3-2 winners overall with the match scores as follows:

Walter Gilbert/Pete Murray lost 6&5

Stephen Aherne/Tom Purcell won 6&4

Peter Burke/Eddie Joynt lost 2 down

Cathal Cooney/Jerry Teehan won 4&3

Kevin Cahill/Sean O’Gorman lost 5&4

Hard luck to Joe and his team. It will be difficult to progress from the group stage now but I’m sure they will keep fighting and hope other results go out way.
