A successful Sunday for the club

A busy Sunday was on the cards with Senior Cup qualifying, Mixed Foursomes, Ladies Junior Cup and Men’s Leinster Fourball taking place.

At 7.50am Greystones started the day off with Alan Condren hitting the first tee shot on a cool overcast morning. Will O’Riordan, Dylan Holmes, Jamie Anderson and David Byrne completed our side. Eight other teams were also taking part. Greystones produced five really good scores ranging from 2 under to 2 over. Alan and Will both shot 2 under, Jamie 1 under, David 1 over and Dylan 2 over. Our best 4 cards gave us a grand total of 4 under par. This proved to be more than good enough as the next best cumulative score was Blainroe with 10 over. Congratulations to Karl and his team as they go onto the next round.

Ladies Junior Cup were up next against Dun Laoghaire represented by Jennifer Moore, Mary Lockhart, Deirdre Ahern at home and Niamh Keilthy and Iris Haughton away. Greystones ran 3-2 winners winning the 3 matches at home.

Next up was the Irish Mixed Foursomes against Milltown. At home we had Des Hickey with Helen Creedon, Alan Keane with Geraldine O’Shea and away Walter Gilbert played with Aine O’Rourke and Ray Nolan played with Sandra Cotter. Alan and Geraldine had a superb win by 9&8 with the highlight being a 25 foot birdie by Geraldine on the 9th hole. Des and Helen won on 15. Meanwhile in Milltown Aine and Walter won 2&1 which meant Ray and Sandra were called in while 1 up after 16 holes.

Greystones won 3.5 to 0.5. Congratulations to Regina Barry and Paul Keane and their team.

Last up were Gerry Browners Leinster Men’s Fourball against Rathfarnham. At home Macdara Cummins and Michael Whelan were with Andy Nolan and Brook Mangan while away were Michael O’Neill and Conor Lucey with Dermot Barry and John Smith.

A tight match ensued with both sides picking up a point away from home. At home Macdara and Michael lost 2&1 after a very tight affair, meanwhile Andy and Brook were 4 up through 9 and eventually ran out 5&4 winners. Away in Rathfarnham Michael and Conor were narrowly beaten by one hole. John and Dermot were all square through 9 holes but then surged into a 3up lead by winning 3 holes in a row. Rathfarnham quickly took back 2 holes but a win on the 17th gave Greystones the point to make it 2-2.

The drama now returned to Greystones were the playoff match would take place. Brook and Andy were a nominated play off pair and they halved the 19th.  On the 20th hole Brook found the long grass on the left at about the 150metre mark and with his partner in trouble he played a remarkable shot which hung onto the green from where he made a solid 2 putt to move Greystones through to the next round.

Congratulations to Gerry and his team.

Another successful weekend for the club with hopefully more to come.

Fred Daly team defeat Carton

Our Fred Daly team had a tough opponent in Carton House and made tougher by the away draw. So Greystones had three away and two at home.

Representing Greystones at home were Toby Murphy and Jack McGovern while away it was Will O’Riordan, Dylan Holmes and Jamie Anderson.

At home Toby got away to a great start and was 2up after 5 and extended his lead to 5 up after 9 holes  Jack was in a tight battle and was one down as he headed down the lane.

In Carton Dylan was also in a close match and was all square after 9 holes. Will was one down through 4 but then 5 of the next 9 holes to be 4 up and looking comfortable. Last up away was Jamie and again he got away to a flying start and was 3 up after 6 and still held that lead after 9 holes.

Toby put the first point on the board with a 5&4 win. Will followed him shortly after with a 4&2 win. Dylan’s match continued to be a very tight affair with never more than a hole in it. Dylan eventually won the point by winning 15 & 17 to win 1up. Jamie followed with a 3 & 1 win after winning the 17th hole. Finally Jack McGovern battled all the way to 18 for a half point in another really close match where there was never more than a hole between the players.

Congratulations to Pete and his team on advancing to the next round.

Successful day for Mens interclub

On a busy day of interclub competition first from the men’s section was our Barton Cup team who had the home advantage of 3 matches at home and 2 away to Powerscourt. Leading the team out were Dylan Holmes and Dylan Cavazza who established an early lead and were 3 up through 7 holes. Next up were Eddie Lonergan and Shane Power, Powerscourt  got off to an early advantage and were 3 up after 8 holes. Our final pair at home were Chris Boylan and Declan Murray who after losing the first hole developed a commanding lead after 9 holes of 3 up.

Away in Powerscourt Alan Keane and Ruadhan Murray were first away and again took an early advantage 4 up through 5 holes and still 4 up through 9 holes. Craig Hazelton and Shane Nolan were up next and after a difficult start were 2 down at the turn.

The Dylan’s quickly put an early point on the board with a 7&5 win. This was soon followed by a 2nd point from Chris and Declan. The clinching point was delivered by Alan and Ruadhan in Powerscourt on the 16th by a margin of 4&2. At this point Eddie and Shane were called in having fought back to dormie 1 down. Craig and Shane had comeback to get ahead of their opposition by 2 holes after 14.

Congratulations to Ray McDonnell and his team. Next up will be Beech Park.

Our Pierce Purcell team took to the course next. There would be 2 matches at home and 2 in Rathfarnham. However Greystones had the home draw in the event of a playoff.

Neil Lawless and Gavan McGirr lead off and in a close affair were 1up through 9. Colm O’Neill and Robert Clarke were next in and in another tight match were also 1up through 9.

Away from home Dermot Barry and Alan Byrne led off and in another tight game were 1up at the turn. Gary O’Connor and Gerry Browner ran into tough opponents and were 5 down after 9 holes.

Rathfarnham turned the first match in Greystones around on the back nine and built up a 2 up lead after 12 and held onto this lead to put a point on the board winning 2 up. Colm and Robert won 10 & 11 to go 3 up and maintained the advantage to win 3&1. Away in Rathfarnham Dermot and Alan put the 2nd point on the board for Greystones with a comfortable 4&3 win. Rathfarnham levelled it up at 2 all as Gary and Gerry were unable to recover on the back 9 and were beaten 7&6.

So off we went to a playoff and Neil and Gavan had been nominated before the start to represent Greystones. As Gavan walked towards the 19th tee he received the wonderful news that he had become a Grandad and maybe this news inspired him as he hit a great shot to the 1st hole and Neil rolled in the birdie putt to progress to the next round. We’ll done Grandad!!

Congratulations to Jim Wood and his team. Next up will be Ballinascorney before the 7th July.

Our final team of the day were our Senior Men’s Interclub team who were up against Coollattin. Again there were 2 matches in each venue with Greystones with the home advantage in case of a playoff.

Macdara Cummins and Michael Whelan were 1st up at home and in a very closely fought match were all square heading down the lane. Paul Creedon and Michael Keating had the advantage at the turn and were 2 up. Away in Coollattin Trevor Phillips and Colm Drew were 2 up after 3 and were still 2 up after 9. In the last game away Conor Lucey and Dermot Whiston were off to a bad start and were 4 down after 5. Conor and Dermot began to turn things around and were 1 down after 9.

Back in Greystones Macdara and Michael were still level after 11 but then stretched away and won 3&1. Paul and Michael quickly made it 2-0 to Greystones with a 3&2 win.

Meanwhile in Coollattin the home side turned around the first match and defeated Trevor and Colm on the 17th. So it’s now 2-1. In the final match Conor and Dermot were still one down after 16 and needed a halved match to go through to the next round. A par on 17 with a shot was enough to go level with a hole to go. After the tee shots on 18 both Dermot and one of the opposition had about 12ft for birdie. Greystones were away by a small margin and the putt was rolled in to guarantee the half point to win 2.5 to 1.5.

Congratulations to Trevor Phillips and Stephen O’Brien and their team.

Next up will be Naas or Blessington Lakes by the 14th July

Old Conna Seniors team through to next round

On a cool June afternoon our Old Conna Seniors team took on Dun Laoghaire in search of a 3rd title in a row.

Dermot Whiston and Pete Murray sent out a team with a mixture of experience and some new players. The competition consists of 6 pairs playing fourball over 18 holes and the 5 best cards counting towards the overall total. As Greystones had the home advantage we had to give the opposition a 5 point start.

After 9 holes Greystones had the following points total 17, 22, 20, 24, 23 and 22 and were in a very strong position. All the pairs kept progressing well and the final scores were as follows:

  • C. Watchorn/K. Stewart 40pts
  • W. Byrne/J. Teehan 42pts
  • C. Tarter/B. O’Connor 41pts
  • G McKenna/T. Creed 46pts
  • M. Whelan/J. Burke 41pts
  • P. Murray/J. Grennan 44pts

Which gave us a total of 214 for our best 5 cards. Dun Laoghaire best 5 cards gave them 173 points plus 5 courtesy points which gave them a total of 178.

So an overall win by 36 points for Greystones and they now go on to meet Kilmashogue in the next round.

Congratulations to the team and management.

Men’s Leinster Trophy team bow out

On Sunday afternoon Mark Byrne’s Men’s Leinster Trophy team took on Coolattin GC in a 3rd round match.

There were 3 matches in Greystones and 4 away. First up at home was Keith McDonnell who got off to a quick start and was 3 up through 6. Ruadhan Murray was up next and was 3 up through 8. Last up for the home side was Trevor Phillips and again he got off to a very positive start and was 2 up through 9 holes

So while things were looking good at home the going was proving more difficult away from home. Fergal Duffy was up first and was 2 down at the turn, Colm Mulcahy was 1 up through 9, Paul Keane followed and was down early on and unfortunately had to withdraw injured on the 10th hole. Last up away was Eddie Davis and while level early on he was 2 down after 9 holes.

Keith and Trevor put points on the board early winning 5&3 and 6&4 respectively. Coollattin were level quickly with Paul’s injury and Eddie being beaten on 14.

Ruadhan Murray made it a clean sweep at home winning 2&1. Fergal was then beaten 4&3 leaving the match level at 3 points each.

So the final match left was in Colm Mulcahy’s hands. Colm extended his lead to 2 up after 10 but then the Coollattin man turned the match around and quickly developed a 3 hole lead. Colm then fought back winning 16 and 17. Unfortunately the Coolattin man took the last and won 2up.

Commiserations to Mark and his team on a hard fought loss.
