Irish Mixed Foursomes campaign comes to an end

On a wet September day our Irish Mixed Foursomes team lead by Regina Barry were up against Millicent GC in the All Ireland Quarter Finals.

Representing Greystones were Helen Creedon and Des Hickey, Ray Nolan and Sandra Cotter, Walter Gilbert and Aine O’Rourke, Alan Keane and Geraldine O’Shea.

Des and Helen were out first and they were quickly into a lead. Two up after six was extended to three up after 9.

Sandra and Ray were next up and despite losing the first two holes they fought back to all square after six holes. Both sides won two holes each after that to still be all square after 10 holes.

Walter and Aine took to the course next and were all square after 4 with both sides winning two holes each. Their opponents then won 3 holes in a row from 6 to 8 to take a three hole lead. The Greystones pair fought back with two wins on 9 & 11 to return to just one down.

Geraldine and Alan were last up and after both sides winning two holes each they were all square through 6. The Millicent pairing then took control of the game by winning 5 of the next 6 holes to be 5 up after 12.

Helen and Des continued their good form and won 10, 11 and 13 to extend their lead to 6 holes with 5 to play and gaining the first point for Greystones.

Alan and Geraldine won the 13th but Two halved holes gave Millicent the point with a 4 & 3 win.

Aine and Walters opponents extended their one hole lead to 4 by winning 12, 13 and 14. The Greystones pair won 15 but a win for Millicent on 16 gave them a 3 & 2 lead and their second point.

This meant Ray and Sandra needed to win their match to set up a playoff. The Millicent pair won 13 and Greystones responded with a win on 15. All square again. A win for Millicent on 16 meant the Greystones pairing needed to win the last two holes. Unfortunately a half on 17 gave Millicent the half point they needed to progress to the All Ireland Semi Final.

Commiserations to Regina Barry and Paul Keane and all the players who represented Greystones in the run to the last 8 this year.

Another Leinster Pennant!!

The Grange GC was the venue for the Irish Mixed Foursomes Leinster South Final where Greystones were to take on Newlands GC.

Under the guidance of Regina Barry and Paul Keane the following team were representing Greystones GC:

  • Des Hickey and Helen Creedon
  • Geraldine O’Shea and Alan Keane
  • Ray Nolan and Sandra Cotter
  • Aine O’Rourke and Walter Gilbert.

The Grange GC was in immaculate condition for the match and the golf played by both teams was of equal standard.

Helen and Des led the team out and despite finding themselves 2 down after 5 holes they fought back to be one up after 9 holes.

Next up were Alan and Geraldine who started strong winning the first 3 holes. Newlands won the 5th and 6th but the Greystones pair reasserted themselves winning 8 and 9 to be 3 up heading to the 10th.

Sandra and Ray were 3rd up and got off to a tough start and were 3 down after 6. They won the 7th to be 2 down at the turn.

Walter and Áine were last out and got off to a great start and were 2 up through 4. Despite the Newlands pair Walter and Áine won the 7th, 8th and 9th to be 4 up heading for the back 9.

Geraldine and Alan continued their great play winning 10 and 12 to be 5 up. A couple of halves gave Greystones their first point by a margin of 5 & 4.

Des and Helen also kept the pressure on their opponents extending their lead to 2 up after 11. Newlands got a hole back on 12. Again the Greystones pair exerted the pressure on their opposition by winning 14 & 15. Again Newlands came back with a birdie on 16. A par on 17 was enough for Helen and Des to win 2 & 1 to put Greystones two nil up and only needing a half to claim the pennant.

Ray and Sandra found themselves 3 down despite winning the 10th. The Greystones pair were not going to throw in the towel and won 14, 15 and 17 to get back to all square.

Áine and Walter went further ahead by winning 11 and were now 5 up. The Newlands pair responded with 4 wins in a row and suddenly Greystones were one up.

So we needed a half point whether it was from Ray and Sandra or Walter and Áine. As it transpired, Walter and Áine halved 17 at the same as Sandra and Ray won 18 to give Greystones a 3.5 to 0.5 win.

So another blue pennant for the club and an opportunity to get the covered Green All Ireland pennant. The quarter finals will take place in Oughterard on Saturday 13th September. Further details will follow.

Congratulations to Regina Barry and Paul Keane along with all the squad on bringing another pennant back to the club.

Senior Cup dream comes to an end

On a breezy day in Carlow GC our Senior Cup team were up against Rosslare GC in the All Ireland Quarter final.

Represented Greystones were Jamie Anderson, David Byrne, Alan Condren, Dylan Holmes and Will O’Riordan.

In what proved to be a very tight game four of the five matches went to the 17th or beyond. The only early finisher was Dylan who got his point on the 14th with a 5 & 4 win.

David was in a really tight game early on. The Rosslare man stretched away to a three hole lead after 13. David then pulled one back on 14 and after a superb half on 16 was dormie 2 down. The Rosslare man took the point with a 3 & 1 win.

At this point Jamie was one up heading down the 18th, Alan had fought back from 4 down after 8 to be all square after 16 after winning 4 holes in a row. Will was also battling back, 3 down after 8 he was also all square after 16.

Alan got his nose in front after a win on 17. Jamie had lost 18 to be heading down the 19th. Will halved 17, so still all square. It was too close to call.

Word filtered back from the 19th that Rosslare had taken the point against Jamie, so we needed Alan and Will to take their matches for Greystones to progress to the semi final.

Alan’s opponent took the 18th so headed then 19th also.

Will and his opponent took alternative routes to the 18th. Will was over the back of the green in 2 while his opponent was in greenside bunker also in 2. The Rosslare man got up and down for a birdie which was good enough for the win and the third point that Rosslare required. Alan was then called in despite looking odds on to win the 19th.

Commiserations to the whole squad who played their part this year and also to Karl, Pete and everyone who helped the team to get so far.

Fred Daly All Ireland Champions

Greystones Golf Club are Fred Daly All Ireland Champions.

Royal Portrush were the opponents again in a rerun of last years final. Last year ended in heartbreak but this time the result went Greystones way.

First out was Will O’Riordan who was all square after 6 holes and then found himself one down at the turn.

Next up was Dylan Holmes and he took control of the match early on. Four up through 5, the Portrush opposition pulled one back on 7. Still Dylan was 3 up after 9.

Jamie Anderson was next on the tee box. Jamie was in a tight battle where the lead changed hands several times. He found himself one up after 4 holes and was still one up heading for the back 9.

Toby Murphy came next and this was another tight match. Toby established a two hole lead early on after 3 holes. After an exchange of holes Toby was also one up heading for the last 9 holes.

Milo Doyle was last out and he also got into an early lead and was 1 up after 4 and remained one up after 9.

Onto the back nine and Will lost ten to go 2 down, however he fought back with wins on 11 & 12 to be all square. His Portrush opponent then won 3 of the next 4 to run out 3 & 2 winner. One nil to Portrush.

Dylan kept his foot on the accelerator into the back nine and won 11,12 & 14 with no reply from his opponent. A 6 & 4 win and it was one all.

Jamie was in a right battle. Losing 10 to return to all square was followed with two halved holes. Jamie then found 6th gear and won 13,14 & 15 and despite his opponent winning 16 a half on 17 was enough to run out 2 & 1 winners. Two one Greystones.

Milo was pegged back to all square after 11. He got his nose in front again on 12 and his opponent swiftly brought it back to level again on 14. Milo again went ahead on 15. One up with three to play.

Toby meanwhile had been establishing a three hole lead by winning 11 & 12. Portrush again fought back winning the 13th. Toby again went 3 up on 14. Again his opponent pulled one back on 15. However Toby was not going to be denied and two halves on 16 & 17 gave him a 2 & 1 win and the third point Greystones required to finally get their hands on the Fred Daly All Ireland Pennant.

At this point Milo was called in while he was one up after 16 holes

Congratulations to Pete Anderson and all his assistants and of course special thanks to all the players who have participated not just this year but in the journey to get to this achievement. Enjoy the celebrations!
