Under 15s get off to a good start

Our Under 15s began their campaign with a 5 nil win away to Blainroe in the first leg of their first round tie.  This is a handicapped competition and inevitably shots are given when you field a team of low men which was the case today.

Mark Lawless got off to a blistering start and opened the Greystones account with an excellent 8&7 win, followed by Jamie Anderson who finished his match on the 14th.  Not to be outdone, Dylan Holmes also finished his match on the 14th.  With Jack McGovern and William O’Riordan left on the course, things got a bit tighter.  William won 15 & 16 to go dormie and on the signature 17th par 3 missed out on a hole in one by what looked to be less than an inch after hitting a glorious shot and finished his match there.  Jack teed it up on the par 5 18th at 1 up.  His opponent hit a monster drive and Jack had to hit ( an excellent ) lay up to 30 yards from the rough.  Blainroe’s man hit a great second shot but caught the green-side bunker.  Jack pitched to 10 feet and his opponent hit a bunker shot to 20 feet. Typically, as happens in matchplay,  Blainroe holed the putt for birdie.  Jack showed tremendous character to follow him in for birdie also to win the match and give Greystones clean sweep.  Milo Doyle was our reserve player today and also won out 5&4 in the reserve match. A note of thanks to the very young Blainroe team for the sporting manner in which all the matches were played and to the club for their hospitality.

Greystones Teams – The gift that keeps on giving – Pierce Purcell win out

Mark Byrne’s Pierce Purcell team took on Delgany this afternoon and it turned into the clichéd game of two halves…

With two matches away and three at home our first home pairing of Rob Tierney & Stefan Florin got off to a flier 3 up after 3 and kept their feet on the gas to win 6&5.  Our second home pair of Martin Commons & Conor Whelan came up against a very strong Delgany pair and lost by a similar margin on the 13th.  Meanwhile up in Delgany, Alan Byrne & Gerry Browner played steady golf to win 6&4, while the unfortunate pairing of Denis Duff & John Comer came up against a Delgany pairing who both played the games of their lives to run out comfortable winners.

So two big wins for each side and honors even…

Our last pair at home, Stephen O’Brien & Eoin Mullen didn’t have the best of starts losing the 1st, 2nd and 3rd.  As the saying goes, the best place to be 3 down is after 3 and they fought back to bring it to 1 down through 6 and got it to 2 up after 11.  At this stage it was clear that this was going to be the deciding match and Delgany played good golf to bring the match to all square after 16.  The 17th was halved in fives so it was, as is so often the case, off to the 18th tee to decide the tie winners.

Both tee shots on the 18th found trouble, Greystones on the left and Delgany on the right but Stephen played the better lay up and Delgany played their third shot into the green first.  They found the bunker to the left of the green and Rob played a nice chip to the left edge.  A decent bunker shot just caught the downslope past the pin and ran to the bottom of the green.  Still Delgany to play first.  A fantastic putt from the bottom tier to the flag on the top tier left them 3 feet for a six.  Stephen rolled his putt to 18″ and when Delgany missed theirs it was handshakes all round.

Another great win.  Congratulations to all involved.

Next up will be the Under 15s who play Blainroe on Tuesday.

Another Win for Greystones in Fred Daly…

Barry Massey’s Fred Daly played Milltown this evening in round 1 of the 2021 competition.  We head into the compettion this year with a very young team, basically our under 15 team plus (a veteran at this stage !) George O’Brien.

It’s always tricky with three matches away and while we got away to a great start, as usual you never know till the tie is over.  Tonight we were able to rely on our home players Jack McGovern, who won the first match of the tie 3&2, and William O’Riordan who followed up quickly with a 2&1 victory.  Meanwhile, away from home George got the job done winning 4&3, with Dylan Holmes on the course at dormie 3 up after producing a string of 4 birdies in a row,  and Jamie Anderson 3 up after 14.

A great victory for all involved.

Fred Daly update

Barry Massey’s Fred Daly team tee it up against Milltown tomorrow, 17th June with Peter Anderson looking after the away team.

This is a very young team, in fact it is for the most part our 2021 U15 team playing in this U18 competition but they are all exceptionally talented and hopes remain high to progress.

Tee off is 17.10, tow matches at home and three away.    You will be able to follow this match on the scoring app ( click on the link on the home page of this website ).

Best of luck to all.

Greystones Ladies come up trumps in Delgany

Another day another match for Greystones.  After a great day for the men’s teams yesterday, it was the turn of the Ladies who played Delgany in the first round of  their Revive Active campaign.

Hayley Mulcahy & Sandra Cotter got the Greystones team off to a flying start, winning the first match out 4&3 at home.  It would have been a mistake however to take this result as an indication of how all the matches might finish.  Delgany leveled the tie as Mary Hutch and Nicky Brooks just came up short 3&1 after a very strong fight back away from home.  Quickly after that however Jacinta Dean & Áine O’Rourke who like Hayley & Sandra were playing at home,  restored the Greystones lead, winning on the 18th.  There were two matches remaining on the course in Delgany; Mary Lockhart & Regina Barry were 1 down and Marguerite Hamill who was paired with Orla Delaney held a slender lead so it was all to play for.  In the end both final pairings won on the 18th giving Greystones a 4 – 1 win, a great achievement with three matches away on a tricky away course.

Congratulations to all involved.

Super Sunday – Teams update

We are getting our 2021 Interclub campaigns off with a bang this Sunday with no less than three of our teams teeing it up in the afternoon.

First up however, at 14.10 is the final of 2020 President, Liam O’Shea’s Prize which had to be delayed due to travel restrictions last year. Michael McGrath and Michael Dempsey will contest the final in what is likely to be a tight match. Best of luck to both players. Saturday will have given us the 64 qualifiers for 2021 President Pat O’Neill’s Prize so best of luck to everyone competing in the qualifier on Saturday (and in the overflow on Friday).

At 14.20 Colm Mulcahy’s Junior Cup team play their first-round match against Elm Park. With three matches at home Colm will be hoping for a good performance from what looks like an extremely strong team.

Following the Junior Cup, Tom Kelly’s Metropolitan Cup team face Milltown, again with three matches at home. Tom is also fielding a very strong team with Frank Rennix is looking after the away matches. Tee off for the first Metro match is 15.00.

Last but definitely not least, Alan Byrne will lead his team in the Jimmy Bruen first round. We are up against Woodbrook in this competition and Alan is confident that he has picked a team that can win the tie. Tee time for match 1 is 15.40.

Greystones Ladies kick off their Revive Campaign on Monday 14th June against local rivals, Delgany. First tee time is 14.00

The great news is that spectators (max 100) are permitted under new Covid 19 guidelines and what better way to spend an afternoon than watching live matches and cheering on your home club teams.

For those who can’t make it we have a new way to follow the match scoring remotely. You can check the progress of the matches by visiting our website and clicking on “Interclub Matches Live Scoring”. You can also access the page from the link below:

Under 15s move to Leinster semi finals

Congratulations to our under 15 team who beat Wexford this afternoon 3.5 to 1.5 in a very exciting match.   With 3 matches away this was always going to be a tough assignment but Toby Murphy and Jamie Anderson ( The Postman ) came up trumps in Wexford with William O’Riordan narrowly missing out.  Meanwhile at home Jack McGovern halved his match and Dylan Holmes came up with a spectacular 4 on the 17th to win his match and claim victory for the team.

Our semi final opposition are yet to be determined.
