Irish Mixed Foursomes campaign comes to an end

On a wet September day our Irish Mixed Foursomes team lead by Regina Barry were up against Millicent GC in the All Ireland Quarter Finals.

Representing Greystones were Helen Creedon and Des Hickey, Ray Nolan and Sandra Cotter, Walter Gilbert and Aine O’Rourke, Alan Keane and Geraldine O’Shea.

Des and Helen were out first and they were quickly into a lead. Two up after six was extended to three up after 9.

Sandra and Ray were next up and despite losing the first two holes they fought back to all square after six holes. Both sides won two holes each after that to still be all square after 10 holes.

Walter and Aine took to the course next and were all square after 4 with both sides winning two holes each. Their opponents then won 3 holes in a row from 6 to 8 to take a three hole lead. The Greystones pair fought back with two wins on 9 & 11 to return to just one down.

Geraldine and Alan were last up and after both sides winning two holes each they were all square through 6. The Millicent pairing then took control of the game by winning 5 of the next 6 holes to be 5 up after 12.

Helen and Des continued their good form and won 10, 11 and 13 to extend their lead to 6 holes with 5 to play and gaining the first point for Greystones.

Alan and Geraldine won the 13th but Two halved holes gave Millicent the point with a 4 & 3 win.

Aine and Walters opponents extended their one hole lead to 4 by winning 12, 13 and 14. The Greystones pair won 15 but a win for Millicent on 16 gave them a 3 & 2 lead and their second point.

This meant Ray and Sandra needed to win their match to set up a playoff. The Millicent pair won 13 and Greystones responded with a win on 15. All square again. A win for Millicent on 16 meant the Greystones pairing needed to win the last two holes. Unfortunately a half on 17 gave Millicent the half point they needed to progress to the All Ireland Semi Final.

Commiserations to Regina Barry and Paul Keane and all the players who represented Greystones in the run to the last 8 this year.
